Life is quite peculiar,
years go quick, while moments last,
Though the sand is falling static,
slipping through the hourglass,
Chasing hands, we play the cards we’re dealt,
And add them to the stack,
But when the game is almost over,
We’ll wish we could have them
Back.

I feel like a year goes by quickly. But then I’ll think about something that I think happened say 10 years, and it really only happened 5 years ago.

When you have your whole life ahead of you, you look forward and time seems slow/forever away.
When you have most of your life behind you then you start reminiscing and the current days/time don’t seem as relevant.

Very strange thought that at 40 you cross over the hill

In your younger days, you are experiencing new things all the time. As we get older, we get into a routine. If you want time to slow down, start doing new things.

I would remind people that your kids are still hanging onto these moments. If you promise to take them somewhere they will be looking forward to it all week/month. It won’t seem like much to you but it means a lot to them. If, heaven forbid, you should forget- be assured they did not.
Your time with your kids is the most valuable thing you can give them.

At 57yo, I’m much closer to the finish line than the starting line.

It's because as you get older a year becomes a smaller and smaller percentage of the totality of how long you've lived. It doesn't feel as long because for you, it really isn't as long.
For a two year old, a year is 50% of their life, by the time they are 10, a year is only 10% of their life. As you get old, a year is less and less impactful to your brain.

Once I had kids, everything started moving in fast-forward. Ages 33 until now at 40 are a blur.

Very very true.
When we realized we aren’t Peter Pan, it all went south.

True.
For example, I just started a new job a few months ago. That first week or two learning the new ins and outs seem to traverse much slower than normal.

“Sixty seconds now feels more like thirty
Tick-tock, won't stop, around it goes
Sand through the glass sure falls in a hurry
And all you keep trying to do is slow it down, soak it in
Keep trying to make the good times last as long as you can
But you can't, yeah, man
It goes too fast
It just goes too fast
Way too fast”
“Fast” by Luke Bryan pretty much sums it up. At 48, I feel like that clocks ticks faster with each passing year. It seems like yesterday when our daughter was in grade school. Now she’s more than halfway through college. It seems like those years have just flown by.

So why do old people seem to have all the time in the world?
Posted on 9/24/21 at 6:16 am to Ryan3232
Its like a roll of TP - as you get closer to the end it takes a lot less time to go around.

Such a weird feeling.
Well the universe is expanding at an ever accelerating rate, so it only stands to reason.

I can't remember exactly where I heard this but it was claimed that as your brain ages the way it perceives time changes and that is what makes it seem to go faster as you age.
I was still pretty young when I heard that and didn't really give it a lot of thought but as I have gotten older it does seem to be bearing true. The years from when I graduated high school until I was around 30 or so seems like a huge block of time but from 30 to my 50's has flown by.

It all has to do with perspective. When you’re only 8 years old, one year is more than 10% of your life. When you’re 75, one year is much less of a percentage.
Also, if each day is similar if you aren’t doing novel things, your brain doesn’t have a good way to organize each day from each other, so it becomes a blur in the mind.

Next year will be my 20 year HS reunion and that is absolutely unreal to me. Things that happened 4-5 years ago seem like 8-12 months ago, it feels like I went from 30 to 38 in like 3 years. I don't like this shite
Have had the same feeling and am similar age, change your situation if you can, move or explore a career change. This can help make things new again
