Time frame to order a new vehicle?

Title says it all. How long does it typically take to take delivery on a vehicle that is special ordered through a dealership?

About a year, less two weeks and a day.

Depends on brand and how new the model is. Order and pay deposit online. Go to nearest dealer to pick up. Last one was a few months, but it wasn’t released yet when we ordered it.

I hear vehicles are gonna be in tight supply this coming year. I order a lot of fleet vehicles for my company and we just placed an order...the factory says we’ll be lucky to get them by next October.

I would give yourself minimum of 2 months. It could be shorter if it is a high selling car or much longer if a low volume.
Which dealership is also important. High volume dealerships have more orders in the pipe that can be changed before a specific state in production.
Most cars when set to build, codes vary, are completed within 2 days. Within a week they are ready for ship.
Depending on your location shipping can take some time. Most are shipped by rail and then to truck. People have had their cars sit in the railyard for a month.

I put in an order this week on 3 trucks, my build date slot is the second week of December.

Thanks guys. The dealership didn’t seem that they were very interested in ordering a vehicle and quoted us 16-20 weeks. I thought they were just trying to discourage me from ordering but it doesn’t appear that is the case and it may in fact take that long.

I would guess it’s largely dependent on the specific make/model. I custom Ferrari probably takes much longer than a Yukon with 24” rims

In enough time for you to decide that you don’t really want that one anymore

It depends heavily on the manufacturer. I haven't bought a car off the lot in 25 years. Porsche takes 4-6 months and BMW 3-4 months for example. The dealer will usually search to see if a car already has a build sheet but hasn't been delivered or claimed yet. If they find an exact match they can claim it and speed up the process. If it is a Honda you have a good chance (they have very limited options) if it is a Porsche the chances are extremely low (they have a HUGE amount of options). Japanese and American brand dealers are far more reluctant to do it than European brand dealers. I am not sure of the reason but it has been my universal experience.
Dealers like to move inventory on the lot so sometimes you have to be pretty firm or they will keep trying to push you another way.

Most dealers will, they want to sell what is on the lot and make that sell today. Vehicles on the lot cost them money, besides the sunk cost of the vehicle itself.
Whatever brand you are looking for, find a large volume dealer. They have no issues placing orders, because they do so much.
You might be able to even have them drop ship to the closest dealer to you, however some are not always willing to do that.
I live in TX and I purchased my current Jeep in VA, the deal was too good to pass up from that dealer. One ticket to fly in and drove home. It was a special order and about a 6 week turn around. Saved about $6000 from what DFW dealers were wanting.

Just curious—how negotiable in price are they when ordering vs haggling with what they have already on the lot?

What brand? How close to what you want sits on a lot somewhere?
Luxury vehicles light on options are hard to find.

Yesterday at a Chevy dealer on Airline Hwy. in BR said delivery on a 3/4 ton Silverado LT would be late Dec. or early Jan. So six to eight weeks it seems for a truck.

8 weeks on average precovid
