TIL - Interesting WWII story I just heard about.. Rat overpopulation in Leningrad.

Hadn't heard this one before. But the German surrounded and besieged Leningrad and the people were starving. So the people ate their pets to survive.
With no cats left, the Rats became over populated and ate everything that was left to eat. And the city became a mass infestation of rats.
When the siege started to ease up and was broken, the Government shipped in by railroad 4 boxcars of cats into the town to help get the rat population under control...

If they shipped in cats, it was to ensure the Germans had nothing to eat.

I’d believe the USSR burned the rubble before believing they found enough cats to fill 4 boxcars, and had them sent to Leningrad.
More likely the rats ran out of food and ate each other.

4 boxcars of cats is a lot of cats.. But they must have had a field day when they let them go.

Field mice disabled a number of tanks that were held in reserve near Stalinggrad one winter. They had hidden the tanks under piles of hay and the mice got in there for warmth and chewed through everything they could. When the Soviets started their counter attack, one of the Panzer divisions was ordered into the fight and a bunch of their tanks wouldn't start and 250k-300k Germans were encircled at Stalingrad.
