It is possible the gents couldn't swim and we're just going out to a safe depth. If the tides pull strong enough, you can quickly get pulled out past that "safe" depth. If you aren't familiar with the beach, I could easily see this occurring

Running out to chest deep water at 8pm in the gulf is a decision I don’t think I’d ever make.

Swam at all times both day and night in the gulf as a kid/teen but I will admit that I was very much a water logged kid spending countless hours in the rivers and lakes growing up

Has something changed in the gulf or in the swimmers in the last 25-35 years?

Or has the news of drownings become more accessible to me as it seems to happen more often nowadays?

I think it is mostly this.

ETA: But from looking at the FL Health numbers on their website it does seem that there has been a jump in the average drownings per year since ~2015. It used to rarely top 400 statewide, but every year except for one since 2015 has hit 400.*

*I don't know if this is strictly beach drownings. It isn't the easiest site to navigate.

So you see double red flags and decide to go for a night swim? Make it make sense.

That’s awful. Never heard of someone drowning right after getting there.

I could be totally wrong on this but I think the beach attendants put the flags up when they arrive and remove them when they are done for the day around 5ish.

Nonetheless, really sucks and feel for their families.

My guess is, Birmingham people have little or no experience with salt life at best and rip currents at worse.

Can someone explain to me like I’m dumb what a rip current truly is? I was a lifeguard every year in high school (long time ago at this point lol) but still consider myself a strong swimmer. I don’t understand how thigh/waist level water can pull me out and make me panic. I’ll hang up and listen.

If it has to be for me, I hope it's on the last day of vacation, not the first.

I swim in the gulf at sunset about 3-4 times a week

Not trying to be an arse, but that dude on the right looks high in that pic. I wonder if that had something to do with it.

It was double red (out of water) Tuesday, Wednesday, and half day on Thursday. Was still single red Friday.

They leave the single red up all day and into the night. Lot of people likely on the beach still at that time

Mine was not being able to move my legs at all. thigh high and Cant take a step? Took all I had to make one step and that was when my legs were burning from just trying not to get sucked out. Hell, I was screaming for help as loud as I could and no one even noticed. One guy looked at me and just nodded. I was like, frick, im about to die

Don’t try to fight the current. That’s how people die

They literally say in every place possible knee deep is too deep. If they were shin deep, they don’t get swept away.

A lot more people that can’t swim or practice common sense visit the beach now.
