Yep, and really being a “strong swimmer” doesn’t help that much. The best swimmers on the planet ain’t beating that current. The main thing is to just stay on the surface and ride it. Ideally you should know how to swim to the side to get out of it.
Panic is the big killer. You’d be surprised how even very good swimmers panic when they find themselves in the open waters of the Gulf.

It’s really scary.
Wife and I went way out above our heads in Ft. Lauderdale. We were diving down for shells and suddenly noticed the skyline drifting away.
Lifeguard was on us with a rescue board in like 2 minutes but you can see how people would panic. That was a long 2 minutes.
