A week ago, I wrote about a sudden surge, in my family's cell phone data through Verizon. In my unscientific survey that lasted one week in late August, every friend and acquaintance I asked said they were having the same problem: Their monthly data use had been soaring in recent months for no apparent reason. For some people, using more data meant hefty over-limit fees, often amounting to $50 or $100 or $200 extra a month.

quote:

If you're getting hit by data over-limit charges, you might take comfort knowing you're not alone, no matter what Verizon tells you. And you may be encouraged by a couple of things: I've gotten a few answers this week. And I'm looking for a lot more.

quote:

But there's bad news, at least for now: I talked to two managers in Verizon's corporate office for 95 minutes late Friday. My family's use has basically doubled from 8 GB to 16 GB a month from February to July. Verizon conducted a "data utilization review" of my family's four lines. They insist they have no idea what's causing skyrocketing data for my family, or for many of you either.

quote:

We're curious too," said Verizon Customer Service Supervisor Dama Galceran, who works in the company's executive offices. "We want to ensure everything is reporting accurately, not just for you but for all of our customers.

quote:

Data is being used when their phones are off.

Data is being used when the phone's owner has died.

quote:

Another irate Verizon customer is Barb McCullough of Parma Heights, Ohio. She has an old flip phone that can't use data. Data is blocked on the line. But Verizon says her phone is using data. Granted, the amounts are minuscule -- 1.02 MB a month (not GB, but MB). But this "data usage," which seems impossible, makes her skeptical of her entire bill from Verizon. The company can't explain why a "dumb" phone with no data capability is registering data.

quote:

If you think I'm cynical about this bizarre situation, you're right. This is is the same company that in 2010 admitted it overcharged 15 million customers for data they didn't really use. Verizon had to pay out $80 million to the Federal Communications Commission and valued customers.

So does that balance out with ATT now having no service during disasters?

I wish Google Fi would hurry up and do family plans with discounted data with higher usage clients.

I'll continue to stick the often bashed, horrible network that is referred to as Sprint.

Never any overages. Never any throttling. And it works for me wherever I need it most.

Well damn. No wonder they were so quick to cover everyone for data during the floods. They had already charged you poor frickers for it in July.

this is the day that was coming when all the carriers started moving away from unlimited plans

between ever increasing ad data usage and app data usage, limiting cellular data is unfair and unsustainable. Time to go back to unlimited data for every cell plan

just wait until 5g is pushed out and your whole 2gb cell plan can be used up in a few seconds

shite, AT&T does it too. I had 20 gb per month and I only surfed the net. No streaming, no music, and they would still tell me I was going over my data limit. Impossibru

We had the same problem with Verizon the last few months. Just got a notification over the weekend that we had used 90% of our data, but we have never had an issue before because we are almost always on Wi-Fi.

Not this month, it's in 3 months. They're making sure people that switch don't get the credit, and they're not going to credit you on a month they know you likely went over on data use.

It's not hyperbole.

The 5G connection maxed out at 3.77 gigabits a second, 377 (yes, 377) times faster than a typical 4G LTE connection

3.77 gigabits per second means you'll use up 2 gigabytes of data in about 5 seconds.

I have unlimited data so not worried about that.

I have Verizon. Since March, I've had to up my data limit twice because my usage rate has soared with no explanation.

Not sure on the nature of the phones but you could also possibly have malicious content on your mobile device allowing through IP to use its phones hardware to mill bitcoin.

Dont think small, think on a large scale.

Happened to me when I had to switch from unlimited to 6gb plan. In the history of phone internet, I hadn't gone over 6gb, so I got that.

First month after switch = 9gb
Second month after switch = 16gb
Third month after switch = on track to hit 21gb

I called and bitched a bunch, and magically I haven't ever gone over 6gb since with the same exact usage patterns. They tried to pull a fast one on old hammer, but I caught them

A couple of things...

I'm an idiot.

I downvoted myself.

I misread your plan...

I apologize and will now go eat some processed meats or something.

Yeah it's crazy how I never went over 3 to 5 gigs per month when I had unlimited and then when I switched my data doubled or tripled.

Those bullshite data overages were a big reason I dropped Verizon and went with AT&T.

Only had two lines, a large plan, we're religious about using WiFi, and we're still getting dinged for overages every month. Ridiculous.
