I've been a stay at home dad since the last company I worked for sold out and shut down the office here. My wife owns her own business and does pretty well. Both of our kids have struggled through high school and I honestly don't know how either would have made it without one parent at home.
My oldest is getting ready for college and I'm back in school for computer programming. Looking forward to a second career and being able to bank some serious cash for retirement. It's definitely not for everyone, but both my wife and I came from divorced households and were latchkey kids. We didn't want that for our kids. Only thing I would have changed is we would have homeschooled or private schooled the kids.

I think it's one of those things that I sounds really awesome, but I would struggle if I actually did it myself.

I believe stay at home dads are pathetic. I would not, nor could I be a stay at home dad regardless of what my wife made.

it would be awesome, but its a hard job to take care of kids.
my wife has been out of town for the last four days and i've had my two sons (2.5 and 7 months) on my own. the actual task of taking care of them wasn't all that difficult, but it was hard mentally to not be able to whatever i wanted to do.
now if the kids are in school and i'm a stay at home dad, that's a different story.

One of my wife's biggest bitches is how 'hard a job it is staying at home and raising the kids'. I told her to get a job making at least 2/3 of my take-home and I'd quit my job, take over the house, and finish raising the kids.
When she realized I was serious she shut the hell up and I haven't heard anymore about how 'unfair it is I leave for work every day and she's stuck home with the kids'.
Hey, if Momma's doing good and it's affordable to do so, then do it.

There's no such thing as a "stay at home dad", if you don't work you're not a dad, you're an unpaid babysitter who gets rewarded with pity sex occasionally.

Stay at home dad is a code word for "drunk that can't hold down a job"

I've been retired for 10 months. I applied for a career level job yesterday.
Being home isn't for everybody, I guess.

Sounds like a fantastic idea. Wouldn't bother me, i'd get a lot of fishing, hiking and skiing in.

He is a dude who stays home with the kids, I wouldn't think he would be happy.

What about dads that work, but work from home/remotely?
That's not me, but I know several people that do well in the tech industry and can work wherever there's internet.

Wouldn't work for or me, but if he's a good dad and husband, I say why not??

I imagine it would eventually get tough for the female to see the male in a sexual way and vice versa.

My wife works full-time and I go to school full-time. She said I didn't need to work so I could focus on school. Once I graduate I'll go back to working.

I did it for a short while...kinda did it for about 6 months. Two months I had no work, so I just the SAHD thing. Then I picked up some work and my son was in daycare from noon until 3.
This was years ago.
It sucked. I mean, I genuinely enjoyed my time with my son, but doing the laundry, cooking dinner, and playing baby games didn't exactly satisfy my "provide for my family" instinct.
