Seriously, not so much anymore because everyone is older, but my family used to fight.. Literally fight each other. Well no one ever really discussed politics. but on just about everything else. If there was a disagreement there would be a fight.

Yeah, I know.. its trashy.. But after the fight everything was cool. Thinking about it, its kind of funny how normal it was. In fact, if you got in an argument, people would egg it on until a fight would happen..

But why are yall discussing politics? When you are around family.. friends.. why be bothered with all of that bullshite?

I don't think it's quite that simple any more. Your strategy has been mine all my life. Unfortunately, not discussing some of these things with family can come to a head, because ignoring the discussion can sometimes have real life consequences that impact the ones you love.

I'm sure you're correct here, I just don't live near family to be put in this situation.

But to my point, it's just never going to be a discussion I'd participate in. If I were around family and this happened(especially if it always resulted in heated debates) I'd either just leave or if I want to be nice, I'd get up from teh table or wherever everyone is talking, and go to the couch and play on my phone, the back porch, anywhere away from that discussion.

And I get what you're saying about real life consequences, but I'd 100% be ok accepting whatever consequences someone wanted to send my way for not discussing politics. I can live with that...unless it was Mom and Dad leaving me out of a multi million dollar inheritance, then maybe I'd change my tune

We have a rule among us siblings to not discuss anything about political issues while in a group together. Separately, those of us who see eye to eye discuss away! It works for us. Otherwise, considering egos, etc., some bad things will be conveyed. Once you say it, it’s hard to retract it.

At a crossroads in life and I am curious the OT take as I value the varied opinions here.

I love my family. I would do anything for them.

However, how do you handle family discussions/ family time when one side is extremely conservative/extremely liberal?

I am trying to decide if it is better to spend time with them and keep my mouth closed or just avoid spending time with them to avoid such discussions.

"you've come to the right place"

couldn't resist that curve ball

to answer your question, (I am biased) conservatives have better arguments that often follow a moral code of consistency and common sense

If you are going to engage in a political discussion, then at least have a position to start with

listen, try to understand, speak softly in response

I tend to get worked up, so speaking softly is my weakness...

speaking softly prevents a fool from getting riled up...and a great many liberals are fools...the name calling starts quickly when you challenge their positions with logic and common sense

My wife hates to have political discussions, my teenagers don't mind it...

we're all pretty consistent in our views...so nothing goes sideways

I have a cousin who has 3 degrees and never worked a day in his life, he's now 60!!! living off a nice inheritance...we don't see eye to eye on politics

every now and then we swap emails...he tries to rebuke me sometimes, I don't have any of it
