My family and I agree on national politics but not state

It’s messed up, just like Louisiana

Wait is this like dad, mom, brother? or Wife FIL MIL? type family, if its that latter, tell them to STFU

Tread carefully many of families have been ruined over politics.

FIFY

Don’t have combative discussions with family if you think it will result in you losing ties with someone you love. There is no reason to essentially cut off a family member for political differences

I always try to keep it positive and fair if it comes up. Wife’s grandmother and uncle won’t leave us alone about the damn vaccine and how this new variant could pick me off. I can’t wait to break it to them that I survived Covid without it. Will do it in person just to see the looks on their faces.

During election time, I’d agree. Everyone is talking politics. Outside of that
no, everyone is not talking about it during election time.

And yet I'm in hot water because I think his administration spent too much money to be considered "small government."

any member of my family who has anything going on is sick to death of politics and avoids talking about it. the ones who insist on talking about it constantly have nothing else of interest going on in their life. i usually try to change the subject.

I was exaggerating obviously. But it is harder to completely avoid hearing about the election and politics during that time.

I don't even know if they are conservative. Just two very successful men that don't wanna get taxed into oblivion and loathe what the left has become.

I leave the room. My husbands parents are “Biden people” and she’s more outwardly opinionated than he is — problem is she spews cnn “info” or just stuff that she doesn’t know what she’s saying.

It starts and up and in another room. Easiest solution I’ve found.

We never discuss politics. I don't even know who my parents or siblings voted for.

I have the same problem, and I have asked if we can just talk about something / anything different. Our life experiences have given us different perspectives and no amount of oral debate will change our experiences.

However, how do you handle family discussions/ family time when one side is extremely conservative/extremely liberal?

Open carry law.

I haven't talked 1 word of politics with anyone in real life in years. Have people made references while talking to me? Sure. I just don't answer, and that's that. If they keep going, I exit the conversation.

It's extremely simple. You're doing it wrong if you feel you can't avoid it. You either want every topic to be about politics or you're hanging out with the wrong people.

I don't think it's quite that simple any more. Your strategy has been mine all my life. Unfortunately, not discussing some of these things with family can come to a head, because ignoring the discussion can sometimes have real life consequences that impact the ones you love.
