At a crossroads in life and I am curious the OT take as I value the varied opinions here.

I love my family. I would do anything for them.

However, how do you handle family discussions/ family time when one side is extremely conservative/extremely liberal?

I am trying to decide if it is better to spend time with them and keep my mouth closed or just avoid spending time with them to avoid such discussions.

Why in the frick do people waste family time talking politics?

My family always wants to talk politics when we have the rare opportunity to get together, and frankly, it makes me want to spend less time visiting, even though we largely agree on things.

We all like Trump. We're all Republicans. I'd vote for him again. And yet I'm in hot water because I think his administration spent too much money to be considered "small government."

I'd rather spend zero time talking about politics and more talking about our lives.

My family adheres to the old adage that when together, don't discuss politics or religion.

I have the same issues. Keep your mouth shut. Your family is more important than your opinions.

How can you avoid it?

Its quite literally the only thing in the news.

Its overtaken sports, entertainment, literally everything.

I find it impossible to avoid.

I've been avoiding a handful of my wife's relatives for 5 years now and it hasn't been an issue.

Don't talk about politics?

ETA: I'm not trying to be a smartass here, this is truly my advice. If you know it'll lead to conflict, never bring it up, and if/when they bring it up, politely change the topic. If they press, say you'd prefer not to discuss politics.

Family arguments over politics should be avoided. State your view, but don't let it become a debate.

I goad one side into wild remarks regarding the other side and sit back and watch chaos ensue. They fall for it every time and don't realize they are essentially the same person shouting at each other for the same reasons. It's very fun.

Avoid any conversations related to politics. IF they press on and on about it, just walk away. Change the subject and talk about anything else.

I've noticed older family members love to talk about their health and the myriad of ailments they have to live with. Ask them about any doctor they use and they can go on for hours.

Just avoid politics. For everything else, pick your battles. Everything doesn't have to turn into an argument.

I wouldn't hang out in "real life" with anyone who regularly discussed politics in that fashion. And yes, that's family included.

If the conversation is often about politics and usually results in arguing, I'd 100% avoid spending time with them, and I'd tell them why too.

Relatives are like old keepsakes; they’re best managed when put into a box.
