This needs to be cleared up: Social Distancing =/= Shutting Things Down

I’m tired of people not understanding the difference between social distancing and shutting things down.
The Left: “We need to continue doing what we’re doing because the social distancing is working!”
The Right: “We need to re-open things because the social distancing is killing the economy!”
Both are wrong. They both mean to say “shutdown” instead of “social distancing”.
We can have a hybrid model where we:
1. Re-open businesses (not concerts/sports/crowded venues and potentially capacity restrictions on some stuff)
2. Continue social distancing (6ft when possible)
3. Continue good hand/face hygiene and potentially mask wearing
4. Continue to isolate vulnerable
5. Continue to work from home when possible
6. Continue to ramp testing
So, in short, the stuff that is really working to crush this virus (listed above) we could continue to do while also re-opening a large % of businesses. NO ONE is suggesting seriously that we just go back to how things were before right away but the media and governors are freaking out like that is what people are suggesting we do.

I would be fine with this but you're going to get a lot of chicken littles up in this thread who believe Americans can't be trusted to do these things.

Last time I checked we have roughly 30 million unemployed Americans who had jobs this time last month.

Unfortunately, because we’re idiots, most people wouldn’t have engaged in the social distancing if the government had never slammed the breaks on everything. It took a complete shutdown to wake most people the frick up. And when we end the shutdown, it will just be a couple weeks before the majority of people no longer adhere to the social distancing measures.
I’m fine with that though. I think a 30~ day “pause” was worth it to give us some time to make adjustments and gets supplies and what not, but starting May 1 let freedom ring and see where the chips fall.

You're confused.
I said Americans are already doing the social distancing and hygiene things and isolating the vulnerable. So the argument that we can't be trusted to do those things when we open businesses doesn't hold water.

Ehh I don't know if it'll be that short of a timeframe. Eventually, yes, but this will leave a very lasting impact on how people operate/behave.

The most charitable reading of that is that he poorly articulated that only some of the mitigation measures would have to stay in place until the antibody testing is widespread.
I read it as the stay at home order will remain in place until we have a vaccine.
