I agree with your general point, however in some instances "social distancing" does mean shutting things down. The IHME models that everyone keeps citing define "social distancing" as schools closed, nonessential businesses closed, and citizens being asked to stay at home.

It also assumes no widespread testing, which we'll have very soon.

That is how we isolate and trace and really prevent bad clusters.

ETA:

And as someone who has been tracking it every release and lives in healthcare data for hundreds of hospitals every day, that thing has been an absolute joke. It assumed widespread mitigation since the beginning and the numbers at first were 5x higher than they are now.

It is absurd.

At least around here the problem is that social distancing has functioned as a lock down. "You were not sufficiently social distancing" "we have reports of people not socially distancing" has been used as justification to close parks and even some businesses, just as an example. This on top of the closing of a lot of places where it would be impossible, like restaurants and bars.

The term social distancing versus the term lock down doesn't matter, it's the enforcement. That's why there's confusion. Yes we're being told only to socially distance, but people are calling it a lock down. That's because we've been locked down.

Well that’s the mode that has been the absolute most wrong about this entire thing.

Unfortunately, because we’re idiots, most people wouldn’t have engaged in the social distancing if the government had never slammed the breaks on everything. It took a complete shutdown to wake most people the frick up. And when we end the shutdown, it will just be a couple weeks before the majority of people no longer adhere to the social distancing measures.

I’m fine with that though. I think a 30~ day “pause” was worth it to give us some time to make adjustments and gets supplies and what not, but starting May 1 let freedom ring and see where the chips fall.

You think the government is just going to have all this power then relinquish it when this is all over? No they are going to give back what they don’t need and keep the rest.

For example look at the temporary 1% sales tax that we were given so LSU football didn’t cancel their season (JBE threat). It was supposed to be a one year tax. It is now a 0.5% sales tax that has no end in sight.

ie they were okay paying 1% extra and we still need some so we will only make it a 0.5%. Yay look what we did for y’all!

ETA: I see you are from Arkansas, and you may not get my reference, but my point still stands.

Which models, in your opinion, are closer to the mark?

So it was the "most" wrong, but nothing else was better?

I guarantee you that in 2 weeks of re-opening things, under strict guidelines to continue social distancing and other precautions, that people will not go back to acting the way they did prior to this around each other.

That is an absurd suggestion frankly. It'll take a while before that happens. I shook strangers' hands before this without thinking. You think if we re-open some things in some areas on May 1st that people will start shaking stranger hands everywhere by May 14th?

Come on now. People will still be freaked out and wearing masks and staying 6 ft. away at that point.

Yeah, I'm not defending the model. I've been hypercritical of the models on here for a while now. Just saying that when some politicians say the words "social distancing" they're referring to shutdowns, because they're being heavily influenced by these models and their terminology. Or maybe that's just my perception because I'm in Washington, where the IHME is based and Jay Inslee is up their arse.

ETA: Also, IHME has not been the most wrong, that would probably go to Imperial College. IHME is probably the most optimistic of the widely used models.

What you were replying too was a poster saying that if the lockdown persists for Much longer people will openly start disobeying the rules. I thought you were saying they weren’t. My bad if that’s not what you meant.

ETA
Just went and looked into it and saw that I too was making the same mistake as some people as that I was thinking the person was talking about shutdown measures when saying social distancing.

We can have a hybrid model where we:
1. Re-open businesses (not concerts/sports/crowded venues and potentially capacity restrictions on some stuff)
2. Continue social distancing (6ft when possible)
3. Continue good hand/face hygiene and potentially mask wearing
4. Continue to isolate vulnerable
5. Continue to work from home when possible
6. Continue to ramp testing

So, in short, the stuff that is really working to crush this virus (listed above) we could continue to do while also re-opening a large % of businesses. NO ONE is suggesting seriously that we just go back to how things were before right away but the media and governors are freaking out like that is what people are suggesting we do.

I would be ok with all of this. The biggest thing that puts a wrinkle in everything is schools, daycares, and summer camps. If kids have to stay home, there is a good % of people stuck at home with their kids. On the flip side, opening up schools basically fricks a lot of social distancing, b/c kids will help spread it.

Shutting things down was only necessary because you Cletuses don't wash your hands and can't social distance.

Black people are suffering the most from this. Are you saying they’re too stupid to listen to social distancing rules?
