Vets are like everyone else. They will take a check if it’s offered. There is an entire non profit industry dedicated to helping vets get disability checks as they ETS.

Most of the time it’s 10-15 percent stuff. So just a few hundred a month.

My sister’s boyfriend is “disabled” yet he ain’t crippled, deaf, or blind. He might be mentally disabled considering he is dating my sister.

I worked for a company that performs disability claim verification exams. I know that our business boomed a couple of years ago after they added some new diagnoses to the list that can be claimed.

My BIL is former military and he recently got on disability. He still works, and runs daily...looking at him you'd think he was fit as a fiddle. But he has pretty bad back problems from landing on carriers for 20+ years.

I won't say that some people don't milk that system, but I'd much prefer that kind of shite go to veterans than lazy assholes who don't do shite and mooch/live off the government for nothing. I feel like the vets at least earned it.

Went to grad school with a guy who has had epilepsy since he was a kid, hid it from the military, spent less than 3 years as an officer, then was medically discharged.

He gets a check every single month for $4000+, tax free.

Yep

It would have been cool to be born in China instead of into the American century of humiliation

I don’t know why we can’t just become Japan and acknowledge that we’re irrelevant but also full

Most millenials don’t realize that we don’t need to save for retirement because we’ll get stabbed by an immigrant in a few years

You could always live in Russia.

Because they have it so much better than us.

almost every former fighter pilot I know has neck or back issues, ran into a guy down at a function at Randolph JRB last month who was wearing a leg brace, for drop foot, told me he had no feeling in that leg from about mid thigh down, leg had atrophied down to almost nothing, and that all happened as a T-38 IP

Just making a point

Yeah we have our issues here but this is still the greatest country that has ever existed and there is nowhere else on Earth, past or present, that has presented its citizens more opportunity to live fruitfully, comfortably, and free. And none of us should ever think it's better somewhere else because it isn't.

Its gone from $20 billion to $150 billion over last 15 years or so.

Like 40% of those enlisted in 2010 get disability checks. Its fricking welfare.

Plus a lot of them were probably exposed to a bunch of cancer causing chemicals, that won’t show a negative impact for years on out.

I feel like they do or the fake news wouldn’t tell us Russia is so bad

The problem is that you can’t move to one of these countries because they are suspicious of us just like when a Californian leaves California

Folks get quite a bit of disability now for PTSD....... Also, I often come across quite a few veterans with "service-related disabilities" who are perfectly fine to walk 18 holes of golf and swing a club violently.

Neighbor is a “disabled veteran” probably around 40.

No idea what his disability is but he has no trouble jumping in his f250 and hunting and fishing all the time. Nice guy and good neighbor otherwise.

I had a neighbor that was Injured in a drill and cut some tendons in his left hand (he's right handed). He cant make a full fist with his left hand so he gets full VA disability. He works full time in construction.

Let me say first I am not a veteran. I have never served in the military. But I belong to an organization called Wounded War Hero’s that helps veterans. I can tell you that PTSD is real for most veterans who have served in combat. Most of the veterans I deal with have it. I will not say that all PTSD claims are legitimate though. Just like any system there are abuses. However, PTSD is mentally terrible. Just look at the suicide rates of our veterans and it is astronomically higher than the general population. Some of the veterans will talk to me about it, some won’t. But there are 2 recurring themes they have expressed to me that really messes them up. First is why did they live while many of their team mates died. Second is that, particularly in the wars involving Muslims, many were forced to kill women and children because the enemy used them to carry hidden bombs that would have killed their team mates and squads. Our enemies had no inhibitions about using women and children in such a manner. Our American ideals about fair play even in war causes them extreme mental anguish when situations force them to do this. Our enemies know this and continually use this tactic. Our soldiers have no choice but to respond.

Again I am not saying all PTSD claims are valid and there are some people gaming the system. But PTSD is a real and terrible thing.

Don’t necessarily judge them if you haven’t walked in their shoes.
