I could be wrong, but I get the feeling that the Russian Orthodox Church is doing pretty well and you would think that the Soviet government was just as harsh as the East German government.

Maybe the Germans from that area just have a different mindset about religious matters.

How were the Germans converted from paganism to Christianity anyway? Top down or bottom up?

Some love God but have no interest in playing the games of denominations.

Ironically, the states that formed the old East Germany are the areas with the highest number of votes for the AFD, which is the only political party addressing the issues of immigration and the EU, much to the dismay of the German establishment.

This map is not accurate and/or is deceptive. Populations in the former GDR are certainly less religious than those in the former Federal Republic, but nothing like what is referenced and insinuated in your map. Being a member of a church in the former GDR was an inhibitory factor to advancement and served as a disincentive to join a church. Protestants outnumber Catholics 7 to 1 in the former East and seem to be less “religious”. Over 50% of people in the western part describe themselves as religious while only about 30% do in the east. A significant difference, but nothing like what is depicted in that map.

From 1914 to 1990 the East Germans had the following happen: Losing WWI, Hyperinflation and massive food shortages, Nazism followed by ww2, Russian army raping and pillaging at the end of ww2, and East German stasi controlling life for 40+ years. So two world wars that wiped out young men of two consecutive generations followed by 40 years of brutal oppression.

That isn’t a century that lends itself to strong religious beliefs.

God is love, but he is also anger and wrath, and woe betide anyone that ever forgets that.

You are almost 100% guaranteed to be the religion of the culture you were raised in. No surprise here.

It is a surprise to me. The Eastern Orthodox Church in Russia is well represented. The same people that governed the USSR were the drivers of policy and propaganda. For this map to look like it does now is not something that I expected.

Well, they got more love than they could handle in the 20th century.

East Germany in 1945 was a moonscape. The only way to get your immediate food and shelter needs met was to get with the program asap. Ditto later on when you wanted a job and an education for your children. The soviet union never had that kind of opportunity in Russia and even found it expedient at times, like in WWII, to accomodate religion.

If the Utah National Guard had conquered Eastern Getmany, they'd all be Mormons today.

Why did religion die in East Germany, when it thrived in Poland?

What was different?

A lot of people in the east were refugees too. They were Prussian, Pomeranian, or even exiles from Romania.

True.

However, the people of East Berlin longed for what West Berlin had. I would have thought that there would have been some influx.

FWIW, I am friends with a couple of Germans whose family is centered in East Berlin. The extended family is from Dresden. I will have to get their insight. I have traveled to both before and it didn’t really dawn on me. I do know that the TV tower in Berlin reflects a cross off of the spherical portion and that was mentioned as an example where Christianity was represented (ironically on a communist built tower).
