I'm wasn't the one calling out people who don't believe in their fictional character. I prefer Gandalf personally, as he had much cool magic tricks.

this is a HISTORY thread about how effective the east german regime was at completely reorganizing human society as we know it.

Yes but the next question that comes to my mind is so what? Is your point that a government at the point of a gun can change about anything? Yeah, that's probably right.
Also, are the Germans really unified as a population or are they Balkanized?

I agree 100%. Look at the people who wrote the bible and how back asswards they were back then. Hell just in the early 1900s you see 13 year old girls being married off to 2o year olds and that is just over a 100 years ago, not thousands.

Most people who believe in the bible are just blindly following it, because they were brainwashed into believing in it as a kid. The oblivious ones perpetuate this cycle by forcing their kids to go, and it continues on.

If people actually read the bible, it tells you some amazing ways to live your life that if you did in 2021 would get you killed or put in jail for life. For example, it tells you how to properly mark your slave and how you can beat your slave with a rod. It also calls for the stoning of your children in the town square for disobedience. I'm also sure the ladies will appreciate these teachings in the bible, where women aren't allowed to speak in church, let alone have any position within the church. Women are to be educated at home (not at school) by their husband, and for damn sure not by another woman. Also the bible specifically tells us that women were created to serve men, just like men were created to serve god.

But what I don't get is why the preacher man only picks out certain parts of the bible and ignores the others. How does he know which part of gods word to ignore and to preach about?

The early history of Protestant struggles in Europe I think makes it more distrustful of the state

Are you making a specific argument about Germany, or a broader one about Protestant faiths?

If broader, Protestant faiths were state religions in England, and in the Massachusetts Colony.

How would you incorporate that into your argument?

But neither were nationalistic in nature. The state faith of England arose out of a king's desire to control the church and obtain a divorce. And after the Glorious Revolution and the ascension of William and Mary, it was Parliament, not the monarch, who held power. And in Massachusetts, the Puritans weren't separatists. They were British subjects who simply wanted to practice their faith.

Contrast these examples of Catholic nationalism. It was at the heart of the Polish solidarity movement. It was key to Spain and Portugal's rejection of socialism in the early 20th century. Catholic nationalism was also the basis for Engelbert Dollfuss's Fatherland Front in Austria, which rejected the pan-German ideology of the Nazis. And lastly, the basis for Croatian independence from Yugoslavia in the 1990's was largely based on their identity as Catholic Slavs.

Interesting that you fail to see just how ludicrous these two statements sound. Especially when strung together like you've done.

"There is no God. Well, there is a God-like entity, but I scoff at that entity being called 'God.' And by the way, I just so happen to understand the nature of this god-like entity. I know I just said that it's 'bigger than us,' which would imply that we can't understand it. But I do. Believe me. Because I said so."

How would you define nationalist? And how would you address Southern nationalism in the United States?

I haven’t studied Protestantism, but if you look at modern Protestant countries, and compare them to Catholic ones, the Catholic ones have healthier and more normal values.

I say that as an Anglican.

But are Protestant religions the problem? Or was it a deeper cultural issue that predates Christianity? And manifested in the Protestant revolution?

I'd define nationalists as a group of people who seek to be a self-governing authority based upon shared traits, identities and/or cultures. I'd argue that Southern nationalism does not stem from religion, but rather two things. Prior to the war, that common trait was economic in nature and consequently created a philosophical unity. After the war, that common trait was psychological in nature and consequently created cultural unity.

Agreed, however by the look of things it will take at a minimum century's to naturally rid this earth of religion so at least they got a good head start. Religion continues to survive thanks to the perpetual brainwashing of the young.

Oh dear...have you read the bible? It is absolutely filled with rape, murder, child sacrifice, infanticide, cannibalism and lots of incest committed by god or in his name. I am afraid you have been mislead.
