But I do. Not sure why I wouldn't.

It's facts man. One brother played rugby there, I know of a set of twins that went there as well. I could keep going. I just remembered them, and they weren't included in the original list.

When did all this "leadership" bullshite become such a big part of college acceptance?

When high schools started giving out 4.0s like candy and kids started taking the SAT 5 times.

Whether it be out of school activities/leadership etc.
something to separate to the applicants from one another.

Don't sweat it. That kid was in and the only way that essay played into it was a cursory conversation among his application reviewers about whether or not he was being a smartass.

Probably didn't help this kid one bit (and probably would hurt him normally). Arab and South Asian kids are - like East Asian kids - usually hurt by affirmative action.
Indian yes. Asian yes. Middle eastern Muslims no. Muslims definitely get affirmative action help. They're a protected PC class
You better tell admissions deans that because - and I say this as not a big fan of Islam - Muslims are one of the highest-performing academic groups in American schools. Also, almost 20% of Indians are Muslim.

If this is legit, it's really a big shame, and I'm glad things worked out the way they did for my nephew.
My nephew was a Merit scholar, never made below an A in middle and highschool, graduated from a prestigious private school in San Juan PR, and is fluent in Spanish as well as English. He grew up in Nola, then moved with his mother back to PR post-Katrina.
Stanford, the one school that turned him down, was at the top of his list. He was accepted by Duke, Georgetown, Notre Dame, Vanderbilt, and chose Harvard, where he's doing well.
I remember being a little surprised that Stanford turned him down, because aside from the academics, I thought he would have filled a couple quotas as well (not that he needs them, but you use everything you can).

The end is near.
Rightfully so.

That 20 percent number is way too high if you're talking about the population of Indians in the US.

14% of the people in India are Muslim. The rest are in Pakistan.

What a brave brave brave young man he is. I mean a real brave guy will be attending Stanford. He is a beacon of bravery, and a role model to the future students.

What does have to do with what I posted?
Of the population of Indians in the US (which is really the subset we are concerned with for purposes of this thread) maybe 10 percent are Muslim. That's half of what Abu said. Not an insignificant variance.

You are correct; for some reason, I had the 20% number logged in my head - think I saw that as a projection by 2020 or 2025. 170,000,000 people is still a lot of people, though.
Pakistanis do very well academically in the United States, though, too. It doesn't hurt that many are sons and daughters of doctors and college professors that came over in the 1970's and 1980's.

Why is that? I thought we were including international students as well.
