As terrible as this is, it's not the first time. The U.S. received goods from other countries after Katrina. My aunt had a FEMA trailer with bedsheets labeled "gift from United Arab Emirates." I also seem to recall a huge shipment of medical supplies that languished off the coast because the U.S. government wouldn't give permission to dock or unload or something.

Yes, but that was an unforeseen natural disaster. Same with the hurricane that hit Puerto Rico a few years ago. This is entirely self inflicted.

With regards to Katrina, I’m finding articles such as this, from around September 2005,

LINK

calling for Bush to lower tariffs on Canadian lumber and Mexican cement to get reconstruction going faster in New Orleans. But I don’t see any follow up stories on whether this was ever implemented. Did he ever lower the tariffs, and if so, was there a marked increase in reconstruction once the cuts were implemented?

Well, it’s not like Biden or the Democratic Congress have acted to lower the formula tariffs.

OT Board: “Get the socialist government out of the economy!”

Government: [removes trade barriers, some of which were implemented under Trump, that protect politically-connected industries at the expense of consumers]

Another deflection of the crisis this country is in due to 1.5 years of Joe Biden and democrats. This man has set records in inflation, stock market falling on its face, and no telling wtf gas will be next year, illegal immigration, etc. but for as much as you say you dislike Biden why do you deflect. How about going to the polls and getting these idiots out so we can stop talking about all this woke shite and focus on real issues in this country like China and don’t even get me started with sending Billions and Billions to Ukraine.

I have never in my life seen a headline like this with America as the recipient.
Baloney! It happens all the time. Many nations sent relief when Katrina hit, for example.

Because for as much as Biden sucks, he’s a known quantity. He’ll keep doing what he’s doing. I’m interested in knowing what the GOP will do if they get Congress back in 2022 and the presidency back in 2024, other than what they normally do...which is exactly what the Dems do, which is run deficits and protect their own special interests...

But with a conservative “twist”. So instead of blowing a trillion dollars on schools and hospitals, they’ll blow a trillion dollars on defense contractors....or as is the case with Richard Shelby for 35 years, blowing money on legacy aerospace contractors and trying to keep aerospace start-ups from getting into space.

Joe Biden sucks. We all knew it before. But there are people out there that think we should just help everyone because we are the wealthiest nation.

Why is there only ONE facility for making the stabilizer needed for the formula? (Abbott nutrition) Why did the USFDA shut it down? Why isn't a back up in place?

If you pay attention to the first news report that came out when abbot was allowed to resume it stated that abbot had “reached a deal” with the fda. Why would there need to be a “deal” done if everything was on the up and up? Was it more of a shakedown?

Why don't women breastfeed anymore?

Their hormones are all fricked up. Why do you think they are ALL nuts now a days? It’s not just social media. They have almost no control over themselves or their emotions anymore.

What a cop out so you are satisfied with what Biden has done in 1.5 years so by year four as long as we keep this trajectory you are happy? Wtf you guys are a different breed I swear. So all the things Trump did in four years immigration control, economic stability, record job growth, record stock market I mean actual facts not the made up MSM BS. Hate to tell you but the deficit shite ain’t going away but by special interest you mean low gas prices, low mortgage rates, low inflation, military stout, baby formula, not flying illegal immigrants into American cities, etc I think I will drink the Republicans kool-aid.

What the frick are you talking about? If you need it spelled out, frick Brandon.

I’m just not interested in circle jerking the conservative side and pretending that the abandonment of the teachings of Milton Friedman in the Republican Party is a good sign.

I believe that low income folks are incentivized to use formula given they can use WIC for purchase + many low income folks dont have enough time to breastfeed giving they are more likely to use drugs and/or drink more often (have substance abuse issues).

I mean, I think it’s true that mothers have less time to breastfeed today than in the past. But I also think it’s a little ridiculous to just chalk it up to “because they are doing drugs.” The percentage of American mothers with jobs has to be higher than it’s ever been before. Even for middle class families, two-income households have become the norm rather than the exception. Hell, a ton of folks wouldn’t even be in the middle class without a second income.

That’s without getting into the trends in infant mortality rates that have already been mentioned.
quote:

there also is a stigma in some social cultures that somewhat shame women from breast feeding (which is why the breast is best movement kinda started)

I don’t doubt that there was a stigma in the past. Formula used to be viewed as a luxury. Nowadays, though, there is much more of a stigma against mothers who don’t breastfeed.
