Or like we use to sing…

10 20 30 40 50 or more, Johnny cut a fart, and blew down the door, 80 men died, trying to hold their breathe, then Johnny cut another, and killed the rest.

From Bing Chat:

quote:

Manfred von Richthofen, also known as the Red Baron, was a German fighter pilot during World War I and is considered the ace-of-aces of the war, being officially credited with 80 air combat victories1. On April 21, 1918, he was shot down and killed near Vaux-sur-Somme, France123.

There has been considerable discussion and debate regarding aspects of his career, especially the circumstances of his death. The Royal Air Force officially credited Canadian ace Arthur Roy Brown with shooting down Richthofen2. However, historians, doctors, and ballistics experts consider it all but certain that Richthofen was actually killed by an anti-aircraft (AA) machine gunner firing from the ground134.

The role of the fighter plane is to find the enemy and destroy him. All else is rubbish.

I think the gunner on the ground was widely ostracized at the time for claiming to have shot down the Red Baron.

Roy Brown was on his tail but he was shot from the side, so it seems clear to me that the Anti Aircraft Machine Gunner (firing into his flank) got him.

Was an incredible fighter pilot and a respected adversary. Everyone knows the story of the fighter pilot who had his in his sight and his guns located up, then the red baron had his in his sights but spared him in act of respect for his flying skills, and gave him a nod or salute or something like that. He also d it didn’t allow his squadron to machine gun pilots who managed to bail out etc. (or something like that) I don’t think he was bloodthirsty killer anyway.

There must be some truth to it as the allied pilots flew over his funeral and dropped a wreath

Eisenhower looked at Monty crossed-eyed and confused when he presented his plan, but gave it his approval anyway.

Only 19 of his 80 kills were made in this type of aircraft, despite the popular link between Richthofen and the Fokker Dr.I. It was his Albatros D.III that was first painted bright red in late January 1917, and in which he first earned his name and reputation
