Closing businesses which some will likely never recover in the name of social distancing in order to prevent our healthcare systems from being over loaded. Millions lose their jobs.
Now, writing articles about how hospital workers are being laid off or hospital closed all together because they are completely empty.
So which one is it? This is retarded.
Open the god damn country.

Not particularly interested in wading into a debate about whether all of this is a good idea, but I do want to clarify one thing:
People are afraid that our capacity for intensive/emergency care will be overloaded. Doctors/nurses who don't work in intensive/emergency care are seeing economic hardship because elective medicine is currently being avoided.
They aren't actually contradictory realities.

This x 1,000. I wait every day for my wife to be furloughed. They are doing some telemedicine and still doing teaching seminars, but I assume they are bleeding cash right now.

ED’s in areas of the country that aren’t hot spots are reducing hours/staffing.

They're not exactly mutually exclusive.
Staffing used for elective procedures aren't working in the ICU. Or someone answering the phone in a orthopedist's office.
The social distancing is doing what it's supposed to do, flattening the curve to prevent the hospitals from getting overloaded. That was the whole point, not to magically cure the virus.

It's the same dumb thread every day now.
The economy will likely begin reopening in early May. Reopening it immediately and entirely would likely render everything suffered to this point moot. When the economy reopens, it will be a gradual process. This is pretty much the message being conveyed by every serious public actor right now.
While the plan needs to be firmed up, there isn't a lot of "back and forth" like people are implying.
And the hospital argument is stupid, as you explain well.

But how much of this is truly impacted by restrictions now? I suspect people are going to voluntarily avoid EDs as much as possible even when reopening begins.

Yep, and it's not like an RN that normally works the pediatric unit has the proper training to be an ER nurse.

I get the frustration, and I certainly don't think the government response is above criticism. But most of what we're seeing is emotional outbursts that aren't really grounded in any facts/policy positions/etc.
From the outset lines were drawn where COVID-19 precautions were inherently statist/anti-Trump, regardless of whether they were from people on Trump's team or Trump himself. And that legacy is continuing, where half this board would squander everything done to date just to stick it to some largely imaginary boogeyman because all the epidemiologists are really just Hillary supporters, etc.

I’m giving a lot of free passes out right now because this is truly unprecedented in history, and people are simply trying to do the responsible thing as it pertains to actual human life. Nobody knows much, but emotional Knee jerk reactions aren’t necessarily what I would think is going to be the best answer to any of this.

You do not know what is happening in Austin. You have no right to be critical, it's the local electorate doing what they feel is best.
In hindsight, Mardi Gras should have been cancelled. Of course you are going to say how important that is to the economy. We have to get the Louisiana economy up and running. Of course you are unable to ask the opinion of the 1,104 who have died. But what the hell, that's not much of a price to pay so you can get back to work.
Unless you end up with it and become #1,105. But what the hell, sacrificing your life so others can work is very noble. Right?
