A good friend had her beagle put down.
Two weeks later, she had a call from the vets office. It was the young man who worked there sometimes. He expressed his sorrow.
She responed, grateful for all the times he was kind to her dog.
Then he said, "Yes, when I saw your dog in our refrigerator..." she didn't hear the rest of what he said.
But he topped that when he invited her to lunch to talk about her dead dog.

My condolences.

If you're using the way they charge as a metric for that I would find another reason.

Being in the industry I can tell you its not nearly as common as it used to be for vets to bill the client after they leave. Maybe people in the thread had this experience years ago and more than likely with a small practice.

Having your dog put down at the vet should absolutely be free of charge if they were a lifelong patient of that vet

We have our dogs cremated, so arrangements are made with Heavens Pets in Metairie to pick them up from the vet office. We pay up front, have everything done in a private room and the vet leaves us with them so say our goodbyes. Once we leave they take them in the back and store them until they're picked up by Heavens Pets.

This was my experience with my vet as well. We had to put down our family dog that we had for 17 years about a month ago. It was emotionally brutal. Sorry for the OP's lost.

You'd think they'd have let me pay while I was in the private room then let me leave with my dog's body through a back or side door

This is how my vet does it.

Is this a normal process after euthanasia?

No, my vet has a room for this sort of thing with a private exit and they take payments and set appointments in the examination rooms.

What do other vets do? This can't be normal.

When i euthanized my last dog the vet never asked me to pay. They let me take her home and bury her.

A few days later I got a bill that I paid online. Best way to do it.

Mine used the card they had on file. They told me to leave when I was ready. No need to pay at the desk.

We had a vet come out to the house in January and put my beagle to sleep in our backyard. I signed a credit card authorization before they started the procedure, it made it a little better.

Ruckus had survived lymphoma 3 years earlier, but he was only born with 1 kidney and it eventually gave out. We had a great 10 years with him, and I’m glad he was able to go out while laying in his sunspot, head in my lap, surrounded by his family. Miss my sweet boy every single fricking day. He was mischievous in his younger years but always the best companion. He rode around in the truck with me on sales calls or was curled up on his dog bed under my desk at my home office.

I’m sorry for your loss. Losing the good ones always hurts the most. And it always seems like a kick to the balls having to pay someone to euthanize your dog.

I have a service come to the house for both our Golden’s…
Dogs aren’t stressed, family can say goodbye in private…allows other pups to say goodbye as well…
Put a blanket down on the bed…one shot to put them to sleep, one more to end it…I helped carry the dog to the vets car…their blanket…I won’t do it any other way…vet cremated them for us and gave us a commemorative box with their name on it…
Highly recommend

We have used Lap of Love. Come to your home. Prevents the stress of the vet. Also helps other pets realize their friend has died.

I had one of mine put down Saturday. First time I’ve ever had to do this.

They gave him the shot to sedate him, then I went and paid. Then went back in the room to spend some time with him for about 10 minutes and then the vet came in and gave him the final shot. I thought it was pretty classy the way they did it; had no idea exactly what to expect.

Kind of funny, but not really, I thought they had injected him with the final shot while I was at the front paying. I actually thought he was dead when I went back in and petted him until he went to sleep. But he was actually just sleeping.

I make sure you’re checked out before I ever walk in the room with the pink juice. Anything else is just awkward.

Mine has never charged me to put my dogs down.

Even my mastiffs which i imagine take a good bit of meds due to body weight.

Charge you for burial, then throw him in a big hole he dug with a backhoe on the backside of his sprawling property. Light the pit on fire every so often and cover with a layer of dirt when you start to smell it at the house.

I remember my first trip to Dr Tiller too.

The last time I euthanized at the vet's office, I prepaid when I made the appointment and was allowed to exit out the back door (I was bawling) It went as smoothly as one might expect.

The most recent dog we had to put down, we paid for a mobile vet to come to the house. Still a brutal experience, but far better than at the vet's office, if you can afford it. Once they took her body away, they made a paw print ornament out of clay and returned it with her ashes a few days later. They were lovely and empathetic.

I had a vet come to my vehicle to help my dog cross over. Took as much time as I needed. I actually assisted. Had it all set up with Heaven’s Pets beforehand. I left that vet bc their front desk sucked and almost cost another dog her leg by not allowing us to see the vet regarding what they had done to her already treatment wise and it was looking bad 3 days later.

My current vet (the one I found the day I walked out and called around for someone to look at my dog’s leg and who saves her leg) will let us pay in the room and has a side door. She also made me a kitty paw print as a surprise when my old cat went into acute kidney failure. I thought that was nice.
