re: There can't be many things worse than standing in line to pay after euthanizing your dog

I don’t know. I always have a big sense of relief after doing it. Always feel much worse going in than coming out and Ive done it 3 times now.

What do other vets do? This can't be normal.

We put mine down last year and they had us pay at the counter before we went back for that reason

you mfers are never happy. Surprised you aren't bitching about the cost to nuke him.
Why didn't you ask to pay prior to the procedure? Why didn't you ask to take the dog out the side door? You want them to read your mind? Speak up if you have all these needs.
Why didn't the vet already have it set up where he could leave through another door? Why didn't the vet broach the subject of pay beforehand so it could be handled then instead of standing in line? They do euthanasia pretty regularly (hence the high suicide rates for vets BTW). This wasn't their first rodeo. Any good vet's office should have a procedure for handling that.
That goes both ways.

Pay ahead of time. All paperwork completed and decisions should be made prior to payment. That way the owners are not rushed or have to make decisions after losing their pet. Use a third party crematory service who specializes in grief training and will communicate with the client post euthanasia and payment regarding their services.

That sucks. Their process could use some work.

I did the same about two years ago. It never occurred to me but that’s a solid take.

The vet has come to my home in the past versus making me take her in.
But, this is a rural area where the vets service dairy farms daily so "house calls" are part of their normal day.

My vet asked if I wanted to pay ahead of time when my dog got cancer.

Good to know I'm not out of line on this subject then. Next time I'll pay extra to use a mobile vet instead. In fact, I'm thinking of just switching vets in general anyway. Love our vet but his staff is horrendous and wait times are through the roof.

Had to go through this really recently, my vet handled it a little better than that.
Its only been a few weeks and I am having a very hard time getting over him.

When we put our 11 year old chihuahua down, she let me just pay by phone a few days later. We do have an excellent relationship with our vet though.

Baw, I had no idea how sad I'd be until we did it. This one hits harder than any other pet we've lost.

The last dog I had put down I did it thru lap of love. We paid in advance for the vet and cremation.

Speaking from experience, I know your vet would appreciate this exact feedback and your experience regarding the euthanasia. Still leave if you want, but sometimes the business owner may not be aware of these issues unless someone brings them up.

I’m sorry you lost your dog. They should have let you handle beforehand and then just be able to walk out. Or if a longstanding client, just bill you. It’s equally difficult going to pick up their cremains and they hand you a bag and there you go in front of everyone.

I've heard of a vet charging to put an animal down.

I guess I need to start prepping for this as my dog is getting up there in age and on a number of different old age meds to keep the heart ticking.
May be a dumb question, but who do you call if you come home and find your dog dead, the vet or one of them pet cremation places?
My dog is too big for me to want to try burying in the yard.

That was exactly how my vet handled it when we had to put ours down. Pay with the portable card machine in the room and then go out the side.
I did that once, and the only other time they let me go out the side and pay later. Both times I was bawling.

I have a credit card on file and about a week after that horrible experience they called and asked if I wanted to use the card on file or another method.
