I personally like to see how strong their shell is. If it can withstand my truck then it can withstand a gators crunch.

I accidentally hit a turtle a few weeks ago and I still feel bad about it.

Certainly I wouldn't hit one on purpose if I see it in time.

If I see one in time and there's water nearby I'll put it back in the water if it's close enough.

I'm with nurse, if its practical. I picked a large snapper up the other day and forgot how strong their dang legs and claws were. Thought I was gonna end up dropping it, but didn't.

Dang squirrels, run across the freaking road and make it and then dart back under your tires for the sole purpose of making me feel bad killing them.

oddly enough, I have accidentally hit 3 birds mid-flight. It's like they were on a suicide mission and flew right into the grill of my vehicle. No way to avoid that because I never saw them coming soon enough to try to avoid them.

i move them if it's a straight stretch of road and there are no other cars nearby...otherwise, i make sure to go around them...i've been driving around acadia parish a lot this summer taking bird pictures, and i see a ton of them that have been hit...

Hit a dang big ole heron that was obviously flying along a creek perpendicular to the road. Just came up from behind the grasses and WHOMP!, a cloud of white feathers. Didn't have time to even break a little.

exactly! I was surprised that it didn't bust out a headlamp or tear up the grill.

When I was still a flight nurse, we has a bird strike on final one evening and it busted out the chin bubble. Feathers ALL INSIDE the cabin. Hot, stinky, disgusting mess.

Since most of the ones I’ve seen are big arse snapping turtles there’s no way I’m touching that thing.

Hell, I roll up my windows lock the doors and try not to make eye contact when I drive by.

I swerve if I'm in a car.

If I'm on a bike or foot I help them along.

Old college professor of mine did a field survey with rubber snakes and turtles placed in the highway. He and his team would hide and watch what motorists did. Predominantly, he found that cars would swerve to miss turtles, with some folks even getting out to move them across the road. Almost universally, folks would aim for snakes, with some stopping and backing up to hit them again. That's the camp I'm in.

Side note: I can't imagine that such a study could happen in today's super litigious society.

I got out to move a turtle from road on a street in Lake Charles. A lady saw me, ran out her house to help. She picked it up and it pissed on her feet. She set the turtle down on the side of the road, screamed frick, and ran back in her house. Not saying a word another word.

I never hit an animal on purpose.

But it depends on the situation. If the turtle is almost across I just swerve out of the way. If they look lost I might stop and help them out if the traffic around me is not so bad.

I absolutely swerve out of the way, but I will stop if it's safe and try to help it across.

I’m curious. Do you consider hunting a legitimate reason?

This is a reminder to always take them across the road in the direction they're traveling. They're trying to get somewhere and will just wind up right back in the road if you put them back where they started.

I would go as far as saying anyone that intentionally kills animals or bugs just for crossing their path while in THEIR environment is a sociopath.

And before the OT goes nuts, I don't mean deer hunting or fishing - that sort of thing. I mean those that are out in the woods or wilderness and see a snake, spider, even bees and wasps, that sort of thing in their natural habitat and go out of their way to kill them. You are invading THEIR home, they aren't in yours
