My uncle ran two video stores in BR. Video Stop I believe.
Half the store was behind a beaded curtain entry. Lol

Which one is the location that John Oliver donated expensive items he purchased from Russell Crowe’s divorce auction to?

He did it to attract more customers to keep the store open.

With any movie/show instantly at my fingertips, I just don't get excited about watching anything. The whole experience of once a week getting to go there and pick out that one special movie made the watching experience so much better. Instant gratification is not always a good thing.

Going to the local video store was a ritual, esp on a Friday evening. I remember how hard it was to find Megaman 2 on NES when it released.

I can remember when the new release you wanted was out and while looking for something else, when people would walk in and drop off their returns you would semi stalk the front counter to see if they just returned the copy of the movie you really wanted.

They made 800 million a year on that. 16% of their revenue, no wonder they're bankrupt. Thank God they were too stupid to buy Netflix.

frick blockbuster for killing off the real movie rental stores.

Blockbuster came in and bought out the Alfalfa Video I worked at while in college in Lafayette...

I ended up with quite the VHS collection that magically got lost while we packed up videos to move them to another Blockbuster location...

We have an independent video store a mile or two from my house. It’s right between the post office and a bowling alley.

It’s not retro either. It’s just old.

Yup..we hated that shite!

Plus, trying to go bring tapes out to the shelves and you'd have 15-20 of them in your arms all stacked up in order, and someone would see a tape in the middle they'd want and want to yank it out of there...

That job would have been great if it wasn't for the fricking customers!

Figured it would be in a big city where sheer population would still make it able to profit.

I guess rural areas with no internet service makes sense

Teens today will never understand the simple joy and pleasure of your parents taking you to Blockbuster on a Friday night with your buddies and picking out a new release movie or video game to do that night.

This.

Also getting to go to the arcade at the mall while mom shopped.

Netflix tried to sell itself to Blockbuster when Netflix was on its infancy...blockbuster turned them down.

guess you never had the joy of going to a mom and pop video store on your bike at 11 years old. Rent your NES/Genesis games, grab an R rated horror movie and sign it to your parents account.

My best story is my grandparents lived on lake ouchita in Arkansas and only 2 places near there had rental movies, the gas station in Joplin and the mountain harbor marina. My parents wouldn't take me to the store to get a movie so I took my grandfathers canoe and paddled 4 miles to the marina. Guy in the store was so impressed I did that he didn't charge me for the movie and even threw in a drink and candy bar.

shite, when I worked at blockbuster, we used to have customers try to force open the dropoff box to see if the movie they wanted was there. People would honestly lose their cool if you didn't have the one movie they promised their family they could watch that night.

I remember going to the movie store and renting the last copy of Jurassic Park. When I saw it on the shelf I almost passed out

frick the Blockbuster they had in Thibodaux. We got charged for the same late fee THREE times.

I had just started driving and went rent a couple movies. I returned them a few days late and paid the fee. A couple weeks later I go back to rent some more movies. They said they would not let me rent anything until the late fee was paid. I told them I had already paid it and they didn't believe me. I ended up paying it because I wanted to watch the movies I had picked out. After that I decided that I was never going back to that store again (and I didn't until it became a Hibbet Sports a few years later.)

A couple months go by and my mom tries to pick up a movie. They tell her that she could not rent anything from there until she paid the late fee. She paid it. After she questioned me about the late fee I told her I had already paid twice.

No one in my family ever spent another dollar at any Blockbuster after that.

Streaming quality isn't up to true HD or 4K. Physical media still best for quality.

And those that live in remote areas that can't get broadband at least have a quality option.

Blurays and DVDs are a bargain especially compared to laser discs.
