Reading this thread....a lot of you don't understand basic wage economics.
Number one: employers do not determine wages, market forces do. Employers pay what the market bears. No more, no less.

I would argue that jobs have an inherent fixed value, relative to other jobs in the economy.
And we manipulate that value, through things like unions, cartels, trade restrictions, and even immigration policy. But the ultimate value is absolute, and so over time, these wage increases will be wiped out by inflationary pressure, and matching wage increases in other fields.

Most manufacturers require them to pass a 3rd grade level reading comprehension test for safety reasons. That is a hurdle to high to pass for close to 70% of applicants

That would be true if the government weren't massively distorting the market.
What I think that a lot of people don't realize is that this is happening because Democrats have failed for years to raise the minimum wage, and this is their backdoor way of doing it. They know that, the longer this goes on, more and more companies are going to raise their initial wages, and then those wages will never come down.
Most of my 20 part-time employees are high-school and college students, and they have started at either $8.00 or $8.50 per hour, respectively. I'm literally announcing tomorrow a $1 across-the-board raise for current employees, with correspondingly higher starting wages for new employees.
I'm fortunate in that I think I can pass this increased cost onto my customers with a price increase, but other employers aren't so fortunate and are going to suffer.

What do you expect from people who can make more money sitting at home than working at a job? They will work when they run out of money and get hungry. Cut the entitlement programs and see if things change.

Exactly. I had workers that were begging to be laid off last summer. Word through the grapevine is that 2 have already started asking about us hiring again. They know that gravy train is coming to an end. I know how bad that wanted to be laid off and as long as I have a say in it, they’ll never be part of my team again.

I'd hate to be some of these unemployed workers when the benefits stop. "Why is there a 2 year gap in your work history?"
"Uhhh...."
“Well we’re glad you decided to do what was best for society and stay home until we beat the virus”
Honestly, these benefits should be basically permanent. I don’t want to compete with people who really don’t want to work but feel like they have to if we can help it. I still see jobs on indeed that have over 100 applicants

Well, you’re entitled to your opinion but I couldn’t disagree with you more. frick that. Let ‘em rot.
I walked 2 miles to and from work for 1,5 years to wait tables at 40 years old to get my life my back after some colossal bad decisions. They can do the same. I’m a better man today for it.

Went to Chillis in West Monroe and the lady that seated us smelled like cheese.
Won't be back anytime soon.

I even seen a Guy with a "Help Wanted" sign outside of Wal-mart. I ask him how much is he paying and he just started cussing...

All part of the plan of the powers that be.
Gotta drive demand for them millions of Dem voters just waiting across the border.

A guy told me an applicant asked to remove his name from consideration for employment last year.
It was for $15/ hour.
The applicant told my friend he coukd earn more money staying at home.
My friend asked the applicant for a favor.
He asked him to never bother applying at his place again. He doesn't need the type.
BTW, the two are both white.

People apply for a job to qualify for Biden Bucks and fail to show up for the interview. If we’re going to throw away money, why not give more “stimulus” to people that prove they can hold a job.
I agree. Give the stimulus to people working to reward them.

I don’t think it’s a back door attempt to increase minimum wage. If Democrats cared about earnings, they wouldn’t have flooded the country with cheap illegal labor that depressed wages, or the visa labor programs which have the same effect.

I had 4 out of 26 employees quit on me to get unemployment, and they basically told us that’s why they were quitting. In the past 2 weeks, all 4 have asked for their job back.
No dice, fellas.

Can someone answer these questions for me? It seems like most restaurants and service type jobs are having problems hiring people. This doesn't apply to professional jobs from what I can see. Is this a fair assessment?
Are people still able to get more money being unemployed? If so, when you are unemployed you have to look for a job right? I am sure that's easy to get around, but it runs out at some point right?
Is there some other way they are getting money from the government? I am serious because I really have no idea.
I do know that about a month ago I went to a place to eat and the food wasn't as good as it usually is and the service was not good, but it was obvious it was understaffed. We decided to go there this week and it seemed to be running like it was pre-pandemic.
There was a whole different staff, things were running like it was pre-pandemic. It did seem to have younger than usual staff. Maybe kids in HS who will only be working the summer...But how is this whole thing working? Awhile back I saw that a strip club on Bourbon street was giving dancers a $1000 bonus to go work for them.
Have some of these people, who used to work in the service industry, find work in different fields?
I would think people would want to get back to being able to earn as much money as they can instead of getting whatever limited amount the government would be giving them right?
