Your father had an effective tax rate of 40%????? On a minimum wage salary?????
You're not paying attention. He made $75 cash per week. No taxes. He was a Vietnam PoW that couldn't look people in the eye or speak (edited to add "in public"). It was all he could do at the time. Eventually in 1984ish he was able to get a job at a company called PhotoCircuits which helped a lot.

Also, most nurses aren't getting covid wages anymore. When I heard a lot of the nursing hourly rates around me I was shocked.

So did your parents buy that house outright or are you about to tell us the bank lent your parents money with only one family member able to show legitimate income, which was approximately minimum wage
?

"You millennials think you have it so tough! My dad made $1.35 an hour delivering milk bottles for Old Man McWilliams and my mom was a hobby seamstress, and all they could afford was a 3 bed 2 bath house in Shenandoah!"

Maybe they wouldn't have struggled so much if your dad worked more than 25 hours a week or tried to do better than grocery store bagger. Your dad worked less than I did when I was 15 lmao.
His dad was a Vietnam POW that did what he could to provide for his family. You're coming across as a POS in this thread getting triggered over housing and dogging a guy that has probably been through hell and back.

Yea somehow he thinks my worldview is shattered because he's telling me that his boomer parents that made a combined $41k (in 2026 dollars) were able to buy a house and raise a family.

I'll just never understand why anyone thinks their personal story matters in these macro threads
Nobody has ever argued that poor people didn't exist in previous generations

No they had a house payment and got financing from a VA loan. I don't know anything more than that.

Why should I believe that part of his story when no other part of his story makes any fricking sense.
You believe the part that his parents were able to buy a house and raise their children on LESS than what a couple of teenagers made bagging groceries or flipping burgers? I don't.

That's kind of Johnny's point. If I started a thread saying I was an Iraq war veteran who can't work and my wife is a teacher, and we want to buy a $450,000 house, the OT would tell me to go frick myself.

No you'd need to say that your wife is a Raising Cane's order taker for that to be in line with what that guy is trying to sell.

No, I'm on the side of the argument that it is absolutely too hard for someone to buy a house these days and previous generations were able to get more with less money. But, there's absolutely no reason at all to disrespect the mans dad like that, much less call a war vet a lazy POS that should have worked more after the war. Just trashy.

They were able to, but it wasn't easy and they went without a lot of things that you wouldn't. I get it. For you it's impossible. You can't conceive of anyone living like that just to get ahead.

In 1956, wasn't that your child or you got your arse out the car an opened it?
Or it could have been a specific whistle or ultrasonic bell like the old clicker remotes for TV's.
With radio requirements back then, I doubt you would have had something radio controlled like today's modern clickers.

For what benefit? His point is my parents were poor but we got by. That's not really much of a brag. It was the case for a lot of people.
I highly doubt he knows what his parents took home after taxes per week when he was a child. So yes, he's probably fantasizing that aspect, but I don't really see a reason not to believe that his dad didn't serve, worked at a furniture store, and mom was a teller. Not a ridiculous story.

Yea it's not so ridiculous when you remove all the ridiculous aspects he included
If someone told you they made a couple hundred bucks a week under the table (so not included in any bank underwriting) and their wife was a walmart cashier, what house do you think they could afford to finance and raise their children in?

This is my dad in Vietnam
Here he is making a delivery for that furniture company you say is made up.
This is what we moved from before getting that house that you wouldn't live in.

I know this because my mother kept a diary that she gave me before she died. Any other questions?

[/img] Here he is in Germany after he was rescued. From what I understand he was there for four months to heal up before shipping home. This is the night before he left when the other guys there gave him a sendoff.
