There's a really good book by Robert Lacey called The Kingdom that explains the Shi'ite vs Sunni conflict in Islam. Highly recommend.

Imagine in the not too distant future when the trifecta of conservationists fighting the extraction of oil in America, the world's dependence on it, and depleting levels in the "oil countries" leads to America having the stranglehold on the market.

because they hate us slightly less than everyone else in the area.
Actually Saudi Arabia is one of the world's top producers of oil. There was that whole oil embargo in what? The early 70s? I don't think that helped the relationship, but things changed in the Gulf War. They are probably a more valuable ally that people assume.

The Persians are far more rational than the radical Sunnis in Saudi Arabia. I understand it's fashionable to hate Iran (due to our media and politicians being owned by Israel), but Al Qaeda and ISIS emanate from Sunni ideology, not Shia Islam.

I wonder if they dismembered him before he died.

Because they are stellar trading partners....they sell us oil, we sell them arms. Also, they are quick to squash any radical muslim group that bears it's head in their country.

Not sure about this anymore. The US essentially produces all the oil we need
We produce about half the amount we need (assuming we consumed everything we produced and didn’t import/export).

petrodollar
The lesser known trade in currency
When the US government traded recognition of a bunch of desert nomads over the Persian Empire of 3,000 or so years they did so at the benefit of the old Standard Oil monopoly. Setting into motion the next two World Wars for the security of oil for the allied nations. Inherent in this trade from the very beginning was the official oil currency being traded in US dollars. For roughly the last 100 years this bargain has been honored and the only trade for oil was done in US dollars, and US dollars alone.
However, this bargain has been dropped in the past several decades as other foreign currencies have now been used as acceptable trade for petro dollars and or former middle eastern allies have now been working against us. Will be interesting to see how the next generation goes and if the USD is replaced as your children and grandchildren age.

This has always blown my mind how they did that and we just let them get away with it.

Theyre like that crazy 'friend' you reluctantly hang with who hits on all the underaged girls, has unsolicited chats with random cops in public...while high AF, likes to get naked and hug people he thinks are his friends and takes his cooler to the buffet for take out but you keep him around because he has really good weed and he always scores free concert tickets.
