I was the union rep at the old domestic plant in Hadleyville. Whole town went down the shitter but, based on my pitch to the bosses in Osaka, Assan Motors agreed to take over the plant. We had a lot of growing pains, as you might expect: mandatory morning exercise that the boys on the line hated and mocked, difficult new bosses who didn’t like or trust the boys, etc. There was a softball incident. I had to knock out one of the guys at piggly wiggly when he was harassing one of the boss’ wife. But we eventually produced our quota of cars that quarter, after we pulled a raucous all-nighter while we blasted good ole American rock music. You know how many of those vehicles we SOLD that year? Doughnut, babe

I bet you were pretty Gung Ho about it...

Toyota has offered a 4-cylinder engine in the 4Runner every year it has been produced. The difference now is that they offer 1 engine, the 2.4 L turbo I4, as a straight gasoline engine or a gasoline/hybrid.

Why is Honda’s midsize truck and SUV still rolling with a 6cyl then?

The way CAFE standards are set up, each manufacturer’s average mph across their entire product line must meet the standard each year, and each year the number has decreased.

I don’t know if the 4 cylinder increases the mph for the 4runner, or the specifics for either Honda or Toyota, but it might be a case where Honda had room under the CAFE cap and Toyota didn’t.

CAFE should be abolished. Especially with data coming out that climate change is a scam.

Let consumers decide (with their wallets) what type of vehicle\gas mileage they want.

I personally would love a 5.7 V8. One without all the bullshite electronics.

While we are at it we should get rid of ethanol in fuel too. Screw the corn lobby.

Deming story, Im sure.

I remember when Hondas were trashy, tustbuckets. Datsuns were ok, but rattled if you hit a pebble. None of engines were known for any longevity.

That changed when they adopted his manufacturing philosophies .

Have visited my son / daughter-in-law/ grand kids in Nagoya several times. One thing I noticed is that since everything is "crowded" over there, I have seen no "big" cars at all. Just saying...

You are correct.

I’m currently driving my 2007 Tundra 5.7 until the wheels fall off.

Yep, would love to buy one next go around but Toyota seems to want to die in this hill.

I've got a 2018 4Runner. Had to go to the dealership to get a new key. I asked the parts guy what he thought of the new Landcruiser. He said, "I'd drive that 5th gen 4Runner until it doesn't drive anymore."

Great movie

Remember the scene in “High Anxiety “ when Jerry Lewis’s Japanese car breaks down?

“I tell them they ship them to fast!”

I remember when it was a huge accomplishment for a car to reach 100,000 miles and still be operable.

The rise of Japanese cars in the 70s had nothing to do with reliability. They built small cars that nobody wanted until the oil crisis hit. None of the big 3 had any thing close to what datsun or toyota produced.

Nobody expected them too. It was a cheap throw away product that just about everyone could afford a new one every 3-4 years. Plus back then nobody put 10k miles on a car a year

I love my built in Japan vehicle, cameras, and cutting tools. I'll buy Japanese items before most others.

$5 an hour was a great wage to have. Gasoline varied from 19-30 cents a gallon on the Gulf Coast but MPG was 8-12. We would drive from Lake Chuck to Orange to say was got if for a nickel a gallon less. Probably burned more gasoline than money we saved but teens will be teens and do teen things
