The Reveille doubles down on stupid.

Opinion: Redistricting of St. George affects K-12 students
Reveille
quote:
Turning St. George into a city to create its own school district will do more than racially divide the residents of East Baton Rouge Parish. This sinister and outdated tactic, known as gerrymandering, will detrimentally affect the future of students currently pursuing a K-12 education.
quote:
It is without a doubt that this proposed transitional law stems from perpetual racism, even though Brown vs. Board of Education banned the racial segregation of American schools 65 years ago.
quote:
Majority of minority residents inhabit north Baton Rouge, while many wealthy white residents live in the southern part of the city -- the St. George area. While supporters of this change are focused on race and money, residents are focused on education, including those living in the St. George area.
quote:
Evans said she hopes the law doesn't pass because it has the wrong intentions and will have unfortunate effects. It is blatantly gerrymandered to include some of the wealthiest parts of Baton Rouge which is going to collapse the city's economy. She said the law is very racist and classist.
And much more in the complete article.... I weep for the future of the US.

Uh, no. The “southern part of the city” and “the St. George area” are two completely separate things.

Too bad I hate white people that leech off society just as much as every other race

This is my shocked face.
Didn’t they used to have a hate crime hoaxer on staff?

Is there some law in the works when St.G becomes a city that minorities can't live there?
The whole "they are doing this to have an all white town" is laughable.

How can you gerrymander an area that already exists?
The only people that have gerrymandered anything is the city of BR by annexing the commercial areas of SG

Funny part is that the original petition would have had more black areas but Together BR used that as a lever to get a bunch of signatures invalidated because those were areas with a lot of rental property where people later moved.
So it is TBR’s fault St George will be as white as it is. Which is still reflecting of the average state population IIRC.

Was it gerrymandering when the court decided kids had to take a bus across town instead of go to a school close to where they live?

I thought I saw somewhere that the schools in the St.G area would have a majority of minorities. But I guess facts don't matter cuz my feelings are hurt...
Since when is SJA in St. G area? Has this idiot even looked at the map? SJA is in BR proper. Dumbass

Evans' two siblings currently attend Baton Rouge Magnet High School and will possibly not be able to attend next school year if the law passes. They will have to attend St. Joseph's Academy, an all-girls private school in the St. George area.

Gardere alone will probably even out the demographics. Hell, SG schools will probably be 40% illegals.
Posted on 9/23/19 at 10:47 am to LSUWoodworker
Oh no, we should definitely not make changes that will improve the lives of 70,000 people because it will affect a few dozen kids who go to EBR public schools.
Posted on 9/23/19 at 10:48 am to upgrayedd
Didn't Gardere get unincluded with the lack of support and signature withdrawal shenanigans?

Who cares what the reveille says man? Why are you reading a college newspaper?

I find it hilarious the Reveille and others consider this white flight and South BR. It's like they know absolutely nothing about the zoning and demographics. They just blindly think it's not north BR so clearly it's white flight.

SJA is about as within the city limits as a place can be.

It’s still going off a false premise to begin with because the St George incorporation has nothing to do with a school system, yet at least.
St George would still be in EBRPSS until a constitutional amendment passed allowing the new district.
So, in other words, it is poorly researched at best and intentional disinformation and scare tactics at worst.

Oh no, her poor sisters will have to choose from catholic schools or shitty schools like the rest of the people who didn't win the school lottery.

Yeh looks like on the map Gardere is not in St.G.

quote:Um the school system sucks whether or not St. G happens. Not sure if the author knows this or not.
The educational future of East Baton Rouge Parish students are in your hands.
