The real Lord of the Flies: what happened when six boys were shipwrecked for 15 months

Using his two-way radio, he called in to Nuku‘alofa. “I’ve got six kids here,” he told the operator. “Stand by,” came the response. Twenty minutes ticked by. (As Peter tells this part of the story, he gets a little misty-eyed.) Finally, a very tearful operator came on the radio, and said: “You found them! These boys have been given up for dead. Funerals have been held. If it’s them, this is a miracle!”

None died. One of them broke his leg, which they set with sticks and leaves (it was later determined to have perfectly healed) but no one threw Piggy off the edge of a cliff.
It helped that people had once lived there, though, so there were already wild-growing crops and a shitload of chickens.

Thank god none of the boys came from a Texas A&M family background.
The scene would have been quite different and very unsettling whenever they were discovered.

To be fair, it's probably a lot easier for 6 kids to continue to work together vs the 15 to 20 that were on the island in Lord of the Flies. Especially when you realize they had probably read the book and thought, "Let's not end up like those kids in the book who ended up murdering each other yeah?"

Lord of the Flies was the first book that I simply could not put down until I finished it. I became a reading addict after that. Thanks to Mrs. Prater for assigning it to me for a book report. Teachers really do affect children’s minds permanently.
