That's because Valentine's Day gift giving is typically a lot more one-sided than Christmas. The men are expected to pull out all the stops on V-Day, but women and men are expected to be giving roughly equally to each other on Christmas. It's the same reason why Father's Day and Mother's Day are hated (the expectations aren't equal). The Father is expected to go all out for Mother's Day, but the opposite isn't true for Father's Day.

I have been single for a couple of years now and enjoy not having to worry about such things. I date around holidays to avoid the stress. I have pretty much been in a relationship all of my life and enjoy my freedom to come and go as I please very much.

I think there are problems with the way children view Christmas and Christmas gifts, but that's a different topic. Unless you want to compare the similarities between children and women and how they respond to gift-giving.

We just bought a house and my wife and I decided that our gift to one another will be a new living room rug

We celebrate groundhog day more than we celebrate Valentine's day.
If it falls on a weekend we will typically go to dinner, we have an event this weekend and one on the weekend of the 23rd. Getting a babysitter 3 weekends in a row makes us looks like bad parents.

Are you doing something nice for your SO out of obligation? If so, that would be the problem. My gestures of kindness aren't limited to Feb 14 every year.
