re: The problem with Valentine’s Day and obligatory gift-giving

Are you doing something nice for your SO out of obligation?
Yes and no.

My gestures of kindness aren't limited to Feb 14 every year.
Same here, but there is nothing wrong with doing something on 2/14. FTR we never really do anything for V-Day, never have.

You're the one who recommended being cliche as a "romantic" path to that sex.
Nah, it's just another reason to have sex not that anyone should need one.
My main point was just roll with it. It's one of those things in life. Enjoy it. You don't want your wife to be the only one who didn't get anything. And trust me, those women do compare notes.

Here’s the question you should ask yourself this Valentine’s Day: how would your S/O respond if you simply said “I love you,” but didn’t give her a gift?
Like every other year, she would be happier with this that if I were to buy a gift.

I don't care if she's the only one that doesn't get anything and I don't want her to be programmed to care about that either. That's not what our gift-giving is about.
I also don't care if women compare notes. But if they do, they'll know that I do nice stuff for her throughout the year out of love and not obligation. Those other women have one day to look forward to when their chump husbands buy cornball gifts so they can get sex.

Do you want a cookie? Why did you need to start a thread to praise yourself for these acts?

It's an inexpensive and otherwise meaningless gesture; but she loves flowers and it all but guarantees I'll be getting laid. Seems like a good trade off to me.
Son, if she loves flowers it’s not a meaningless gesture. And if sex is a transactional act, you need to rethink the situation.

You missing the point of this discussion is the least surprising thing anyone has posted in this thread.

Your definition of "sack up' is funny. And not only because it involves being cheesy and cliche in the hopes that your wife will have sex with you.
The height of irony and he doesn’t even see it.

Most all holidays are stupid.
Obviously you baws don't acknowledge March 14th as a national holiday.
March 14th is Steak and BJ Day. Just observe Feb 14 for her and make her observe this in return.

I’m a big sap for cards. He can just get me a card on Valentine’s Day and I’m content.

Or don't be a cuck and have sex with your wife because you both want to, not because the Hallmark holiday says you should.

These guys sure get excited about that one BJ a year don’t they?

I didn't read all that, but it's just a bunch of BS.
Most advertisements, once again, are depicting dumb nen waiting to the last minute to buy gifts for women.
Never the other way around.

Haha so much hate.
Sometimes it is just about making your lady happy, my man. I don't like hallmark holidays as much as the next guy. But if she is happy she gets flowers and a dinner, so be it.

Yeah man. I'm definitely a hater. I wish I got one bj a year.

That's two in a row that we agree on.
My wife and I have been together for 14 years and have never done Valentine's Day.
From her perspective:
"Why the hell would I feel special on a day when every other bitch is getting gifts, too? It's a female pissing contest. And the best way to win is sending me something on a random day when none of them are getting anything. That's when I'd feel more important than the rest."

Well I deleted it. But have a good one brother. Not gonna argue.

The first year we were dating, the wife and I traded gifts for Valentine's Day. Since then, we swap cards, have sex before we go eat boiled crawfish, then go home, watch a movie, and eat some chocolate. Much better than the mainstream celebration IMO.

Glad I don't have to worry about buying the obligatory Valentine's Day gift.
