There’s a pay phone at the new HEB gas station near me. I had to do a double-take that in the year 2026 there was actually a brand new pay phone installed at a gas station.

Bout 15 years ago when the maroon 5 song "payphone" came out I had to explain to my kids what a payphone was. they looked at me like I was speaking alien

The same thing with the Travis Tritt song Here's A Quarter (Call Someone Who Cares).

We had a payphone at my elementary school, and I remember there used to be a number you could call and it would call you back and we all thought it was the coolest thing that we could dial a number and make the phone ring. We used to do that shite all the time.

Simpler times.

Don't forget the ear grease. When afros became a thing, the ear grease got a lot thicker. My very white uncle had an afro, you didn't want to use the phone after him without a box of Kleenex.

I owned a payphone at work, nice little side income. When I saw minimum wage guys with cell phones, I sold it.

I remember the hysteria that homeless drug addicts were leaving HIV-riddled needles inside the coin return slot so that when you reached your finger in there to check for a quarter you'd get pricked and contract the virus.

Good times.
