I hadn't heard about this. Pretty crazy, and will be a great way to cover a bunch more ground. Was initially supposed to fly yesterday, but now delayed until no earlier than this Wednesday.

Linky - Forbes

quote:

While the rover is preparing to hunt for signs of past life on Mars, Ingenuity – which cost $85 million to build and operate – first has a 30-day window to attempt up to five flights on the surface.

Having been deployed from the belly of the rover over the last few weeks, Ingenuity is now sitting out alone on the surface of Mars, with Perseverance watching from a safe distance.

quote:

To symbolize the accomplishment, Ingenuity even has as a small piece of material from the Wright Flyer, the first vehicle to perform powered flight on Earth back in 1903.

More than 100 years later, we’re now hoping to achieve the same feat on another planet entirely – this time with a small solar-powered vehicle, carried to the surface by something plucked out of science fiction.

I wonder if, like a Battlebot, that thing has a self-righting mechanism.

Imagine the nervousness in that control room when they fly it for the first time.

It’s just a drone flying another drone.

This is where it begins...

They could probably fund this program by selling the footage to Hollywood studios for legit flyovers of Mars.

That's why I was asking about a self righting mechanism. I can't imagine that thing coming in a little sideways and rolling on it's side, and then "welp, that was fun."

Gonna be tricky getting blades to bite in that thin atmosphere. That’s what we pay the nerds to figure out, I suppose.

Normally I'd agree with you but NASA deserves way more funding than it currently gets.

How are they simulating the reduced atmosphere and gravity or are they simply throttling/ratio the power outputs?

It’s not, nor should it ever be the federal, state, or local government’s responsibility to ensure your child isn’t a moron. It’s the parents’.

I agree our priorities are misplaced when it comes to how our government (I use that term loosely) uses our tax dollars, but for what Biden wants to spend on defense in the new budget, we could send 8,411 of these missions to Mars.
