One of the largest anthropology and natural history collections in the Americas was almost totally destroyed in Sunday's fire in Rio de Janeiro.
This included the 12,000-year-old remains of a woman known as "Luzia" - the oldest discovered in Latin America.

The fire started on Sunday evening, after the building - a 19th Century former royal palace - closed for the day.
The cause is not known, but Culture Minister Sergio Sa Leitao was quoted in Brazilian media as saying it may have been ignited by a small paper hot air balloon landing on the roof.

One issue appears to be the lack of a sprinkler system. Mr Dias Duarte told Globo TV that a $5.3m (£4.1m) modernisation plan agreed in June would have included the installation of modern fire prevention equipment, but only after October's elections.

Sure the cause wasn't global warming?
Seriously though, that terrible.

Yeah, that was a tough story to read this weekend. Sucks.

Guess there are Muslims in Brazil.

guess that's one negative of museums; when you extract precious artifacts from around the land and concentrate them in one place.

damn that is a terrible loss

It's borderline criminal to have a museum with so many priceless artifacts and no sprinkler/fire suppression system.

Wow-
Reminds one of the Reichstag fire.

The third world continues to have challenges.

Russia is a third world country, too.

I saw these headlines and wondered myself "how the hell does a museum burn down?" I mean, I can only imagine the Smithsonian being a total loss if a missle hit it.
Then I read: "ignited by a small paper hot air balloon landing on the roof... One issue appears to be the lack of a sprinkler system."
Zero sympathy. How can you have 20 million artifacts and not even a sprinkler system? Embarrassingly stupid.

You people truly are the worst posters on this site. I'd read 50 Pecker threads a day if it meant these posts would disappear.

Thank you for that second photo. Elsewhere I had read it was a wooden building and your 2nd puts that to rest.
I wondered why there hadn't been fire walls installed...they didn't really need new fire walls, just barriers at the roof line above existing walls and fire doors that could be dropped by security in case of a fire. Surely they had some kind of security at night?

I read an article that the entire maintenance budget for the museum was $9000/yr. The employees apparently chipped in to pay for cleaning services.
