re: The Myth of the Wealthy Baw Welder: Welding Won’t Make You Rich

They ain’t counting that OT, Per Diem, and Rig Truck charge money they make. For real though, what I just joked about is true. Rig Truck welders are their own business and they get paid a separate hourly rate for their rig.
The single hand welders we hire for a project if needing some welding make about 38-40.00/hr plus per diem.

My son works pipeline. His Uncle is a welder. The old man is making anywhere from 3-5K a week. Not bad for a HS graduate. Has his travel trailer pays $100 a week to hook it up. Good work if you enjoy that thing

Clearly that study did not include the welders of the OT.

If you're a competent welder, follow the money, and do as much OT as you can, you'll be at $100k.
Mobile welding is where the big money is. You charge for basically any fee that isn't your normal working hours in your backyard
Flat rate = $150-200/hr
12hrs = 2x
Emergency = 3x
Mileage = $1-3/mi
Off-road = $100/day

What about plumbers though?
The govt has a website with all the job titles and pay scale for every state and perhaps even every county w/in the state. Looking through this public database, you can see who are the top dogs on the trade scale and how much money these guys can make per hour.
Elevator mechanics are the highest paid by far. From state to state this is just about the case, easily making $70+ an hour. Plumbers and pipefitters (pipe welder) can make $40+ an hour easily. Electricians are a bit below on avg on the pay scale, but can easily make $40+ in many different states. HVAC guys also make very good and can easily make $40+ an hour as well.
Hell in some states, even a damn laborer can make $40+ an hour.
Granted these are for gov't contractors so regular tradesman might not make that much per hour on avg. But the thing about govt contractor jobs are that everyone for that job title makes that same pay. You could have 3 years experience or 40, you still get paid the same.

Are you referring to the Davis Bacon Wages? When I used to deal with that crap, I found the listed rates in our area of the country were much lower than what the guys were getting paid.

This coincides with the what is “good money” thread earlier. For the vast majority of Americans, 70K/year is good money. A welder is generally HS educated with a certification and can make “good money”. I would be willing to bet that most on this board would love to make 70k/year.

One of my buddies is a hiring manager for a VERY large contractor and he told me their ceiling for welders is $18 an hour. That he had a guy come in that had 25 years of experience and had retired from a paper mill but was just wanting some part time work. When he offered him $18 an hour the guy laughed at him and said thanks but no thanks.
I don’t know what he expected. He was certainly in a union at the mill and there’s no way he’d come anywhere close to that with a contractor that basically pays slave wages.
where is this? that baw needs to come down here, a good combo welder in a plant will make $36/hr give or take a few bucks. shite, helpers can make $18/hr

Well duh. The OT makes it seem like these trade jobs are a lot better than they really are.

What is the question?
Welders and other skilled workers can make very good money in this area. The really good ones can make bank.
We should encourage a lot more people to go to trade school and quit going to colleges if they aren’t getting a useful degree

Have you thanked a welder today baw? Welders make our country great

I’m not reading four pages, but $50k for 2080 hours annually with no real education requirements besides a few welding classes?
That’s pretty damn good, IMO.

The head welder at my shop disagrees. This guy does clock in 70+ hours a week though. It’s his trade and he loves it.
