War is pure evil. I'm aware that wars have been going on since the beginning of time, and that many of these wars have defined human civilization as we know it.
But my viewpoint is this, when hundreds of thousands of individuals die, especially for both sides there is absolutely no winners. Everyone loses.

Mr Thompson piloted a helicopter in the GOM oilfield after the war. Flew with him a couple of times and talked a little about the massacre. RIP Hugh

Everything that can be said about My Lai has already been said ten thousand times. What an profoundly shitty war , human tragedy as far as the eye can see.

I think it's a little more complicated than that. You take a bunch of young kids, mostly from the lower economic strata, and drop them off in a war zone, and leave them there with no "front line" and no real rear area to go back to and rest, and it's a recipe for this kind of thing to happen.
It wasn't like WWII where you fought for a few days or a couple weeks and then were pulled off the line. You stayed out there and fought. Once in a while you got pulled back to a Firebase where you could maybe rest, but most likely get shelled.
I cannot for the life of me figure out why the generals did not hold ground already captured. They just sent these guys out to go take a hill, then a little later they would just abandon it, then rinse and repeat. Stupidity unbounded.
Absolutely senseless. It's only a wonder to me why this kind of massacre didn't happen much more frequently.

More like 58,000 US troops KIA in Vietnam, not 36,000. No telling how many Vietnamese were actually killed, but it's estimated as many as 2,000,000 civilians died.

Met several navy guys who smoked pot in the 60s and 70s. Their thought was what are you going to do send me to Vietnam?

That was one of many problems with Vietnam war. Think about it. The US government was drafting a bunch of kids, most of them not wanting to go.. Giving them half arse training and then putting them out in a war zone for a 1 year tour.
A lot of them, the closer it got to the end of their one year tour, they would hide out and try to avoid going on missions, etc because they wanted to make it to return home alive.
The US government didn't really do a great job preparing for war before making the decision to go to war. They didn't really assess whether or not it would be beneficial for them to go to Vietnam.
That war still has a negative impact on this country today. It is sad. The US government lied and it cost over 58k Americans their lives.
Then those same people who were dragged into the war had to come home with a bunch of hippies throwing shite at them, spitting on them.. Calling them baby killers (north vietnam used kids and women to attack so American soldiers didn't know who to trust and you can't blame anyone of them to have a "shoot or be shot" mentality).

The amazing thing is They still by and large love Americans. One of my buddies took a year off to travel the world. He planned a few days in Vietnam and ended up staying a month. His favorite of all the places he went.

I think that they had taken fire from that village and probably some viet cong had disappeared into the village too. I'm sure that the soldiers thought that the villagers were north vietnamese sympathizers. That's not excusing anything that they did. I'm just saying that before we judge too harshly think of the circumstances.
