One of the interesting things I learned from the Burns documentary was that Ho Chi Minh was not a communist at first - he was a nationalist and asked for our help / backing early on. Instead, we backed a corrupt regime.

Correct. Burns pointed out that to many Vietnamese it was a war to re-unify North and South Vietnam and had nothing to do with communism.

I'm pretty sure that uncle Ho was in Paris running around in commie circles when he was younger. I'm pretty sure he was a full on commie. That being said he did hit us up and we agreed to take France's place for some reason.

French steamer and traveled to several ports of call: Boston, New York, London and eventually settling in Paris, France. There he joined the Communist party and discovered the writings of Vladimir Lenin. Adopting the name Nguyen Ai Quoc or “Nguyen the Patriot,” he lobbied unsuccessfully for Vietnamese independence during the Versailles Peace Conference in 1919

After eight years of war, the French were defeated at the battle of Dien Bien Phu and forced to withdraw from Vietnam. At the Geneva peace talks, Vietnam was divided into communist North and non-communist South. Ho Chi-Minh became the president of North Vietnam and was determined to reunite his country under communist rule

We backed the Mujahideen in Afghanistan. Does that make them Capitalists? No, it was just us using them to ratfrick the Soviets. Sound familiar to how the Soviets used Korea and particularly Vietnam as proxy wars against the US?
