The trireme.

Capable of going over 9 knots, this ancient vehicle of destruction was the most adaptable weapon system of its day.

170 rowers, 10-15 Soldiers, and more crew manned the ships. Athens in particular represented democracy where rowers of all wealth levels rowed side by side.

The ship is famous through standardized parts, but the complexity of the ships themselves cannot be understated. Over 6000 man days was needed to construct one, and large fleets could have hundreds of ships. They were stringently designed to the strictest engineering principles.

Still, these ships were used thousands of years ago, and some thing had to limit them. They had to be pulled ashore every night to keep the wood from rotting.

Still, the Greeks, Romans, Carthaginians, Persians, Phoenicians, and Egyptians used the ships to great effect.

In fact, the rise of the Athenian Empire is largely in part due to the dominance of Athens fleet of triremes and triremes and later quiremes were central to Rome’s pacification of the sea.

The main tactics were ramming and boarding with some use of artillery on deck.

The ships even had the power to ward of evil spirits with large eyes painted onto the bows

I present you the trireme:

Apologize, it may not have been wood rot but something to do with the wood bloating from water

That sounds far but I think it’s only about a mile.

The fact that they pulled those out every night is the most impressive part

9 knots is a unit of speed, not distance....

I tried to get them to put this sort of thing on "The Symposium"® along with books, but of course they said no. Instead they created the Book Board, which is a ghost town.

Seems like leaving them in the water would be better.

What did you do with it? Just row around and ran shite? Seems like it’s just a big boat of rowers but not much else. What’s the point?

The wood at that time wasn’t treated with the same treatments that later ships were treated with and the ships would sink.

quote:

Triremes required a great deal of upkeep in order to stay afloat, as references to the replacement of ropes, sails, rudders, oars and masts in the middle of campaigns suggest.[17][18] They also would become waterlogged if left in the sea for too long. In order to prevent this from happening, ships would have to be pulled from the water during the night. The use of lightwoods meant that the ship could be carried ashore by as few as 140 men.[19]

well, they could transport troops and supplies extremely quickly across the Mediterranean. You some punk island and you piss off the Athenians, you have 100 of those things in the harbor two days later loaded with artillery and troops ready for a long easy siege on their part.

Are you suggesting the mongol horse archer wasn’t ridiculously advanced for its day?

Nothing will ever come close to the nuke. I do appreciate the clever design of older weapons though

Nope, it wasn’t directed all at you. I meant that the Mongols dominated 1300 years after the trireme had been invented.

Also, personally, I think a ship and ship technology is much more advanced than almost anything on land but that’s a personal opinion. I am much more knowledgeable about land shite and when I read about seafaring, it just boggles my mind how complex things were.
