Whitefish is great in the summer time. Sun doesn't set until after 10:00 pm and the temperature usually doesn't break 90. Nice golf course with a good view of Whitefish Lake and Glacier National Park is maybe 45 minutes away.
I don't think it would be easy finding a charming small town in Nebraska but if Valentine is the best they have that is depressing. Maybe having every motel in town having a sign on their front door saying "No bird cleaning in rooms" is somebody's definition of charming but it is not mine.
As far as my state goes Abilene is the most well known and it's hard to argue with a presidential library but historic is not necessarily the same thing as charming.
My vote would probably go to Lindsburg. Simply because you can't throw a Swedish meatball downtown without hitting one of these.
My hometown typically turns up on these type of lists for Kansas small towns just for it's court house.

I don't think Whitefish was ever a typical dust bowl type of Montana town like Red Lodge etc but more of a touristy ski town, and it's just that.
When they changed the name of Big Mountain, it went downhill, if you will, CA style. I do still love Whitefish.

The guy who bought it owns the new Vegas hockey team and had them up here earlier this year showing them around. He just bought Blacktail down in Lakeside too, so hopefully prices won't go up for the local ski area.

I would have put. New Roads or Covington ahead of Natchitoches.

I have a soft spot for Blacktail. Great place for beginners and intermediate skiers and kids w a terrific view.
I just got my weekday pass for Snowbowl. They didn't finish the expansion to TV Mtn or the old Snow Park due to fire issues but it'll be ready next season. That's going to be bizarre. It'll be nice to not have to pack a lunch and a six pack to get to top of mountain! Snowbowl still has the best side country and tree skiing in general for my $$. (It's also 20 mins from my front door to the parking lot.)
We have a bunch of Lost Trail passes too. That place is hard to beat on a powder day. Great folks too. I bought discount tix on liftopia for specific days last season and got sick and couldn't ski at all. I wrote them and they sent me replacement anytime tickets for any season.

This.
Is why I'm checking it out this winter. I am not a skier so I figured I'll get my lesson with an instructor on Big and just get a multi day on Blacktail.

Helen, GA sucks. It is a tourist trap with shitty German food and nothing to do.

My brother lives in New Rhodes and I live in Covington. Both are nice, and Covington always seems to have something cool to do. That being said, Nachitoches at Christmas is pretty legit.

Yes. I love the look of closed mom and pop stores, dilapidated housing, and winos walking the streets. The couple of existing grocery stores are not crowded however, except for the third of each month when the vast majority of local residents receive benefits.
