When my dad got us all matching Under Armour shirts, fresh New Iberias, and took my mom to Destin to post photos of us all in white shirts and khaki shorts.

Learning my friends idea of a vacation was Yellowstone, Disneyland/world, etc for a week, and we spent summers in Europe, Asia, Caribbean, among others.

Also, when I went to a friends birthday party, at their house, and they were all close together and small. My guess today was about 3000-4000 sq ft homes.

I thought we were poor. I later learned we were better off than most of the kids I grew up with but my parents didn't believe in spoiling us. No dirt bikes, no new car when we got our licenses like some of our friends had. We did go on some pretty nice vacations in the summer. We would take 3 or 4 weeks off and hit a bunch of national parks. That would be our big luxury item for the year.

ETA in a lot of places we would have been no more than middle class, but we were comparatively wealthy for the area.

We weren't rich but better off than most I guess. My dad was extremely frugal. We lived in a pretty average house and he didn't drive particularly nice vehicles.

It wasn't until later in life that I realized that he made pretty good money. He just saved most of it because he hated his career and wanted to retire as early as possible

It took me until adulthood.

When I look back at every class party, pageant, recital, school open house, volunteer event, tryout, etc. one or both parents were there.

It was after high school when my dad was offered a transfer to work in Malaysia with Exxon for 6 years (dad worked offshore with Exxon for 28 years - mostly as a field superintendent on the rig). I went to college with no debt and had access to things I didn’t have growing up.

The moment you realized you were rich growing up

When I was about 32 years old. Traveled to West Africa. Talked to a kid who had fastened some old truck tires to the bottom of his feet. So that he could walk to school, about 7 miles each way. Said that if he ever got proper shoes, that he would run to school. His favorite thing in life was to go to school. Because he could come home in the evenings and teach his mother to read. It made him so proud. He said that if he ever got a good job in a city, he was going to put a concrete floor in his mother's house.

I came home from that trip, looked at my wife and said: We don't need any of this shite.

That's when I realized I was rich.
