Yep, protesting your local city council to deny a data center build will definitely stop the coming AI apocalypse.
This shite is happening, for better or worse. We can debate whether it should be in our communities or not, but they are going somewhere.
The debate on whether they should be built at all is over.
There are legitimate gripes with the resources required for these data centers and I feel the hyperscalers need to build out their own power supply. The biggest issue that I have with the datacenters is that these AI chips use evaporative cooling which is highly water-intensive, there has to be a better way than using that much freshwater.

I say we just get out of the rat race and let China, Russia, Europe, Asia and Middle East make major advances in AI. We can sit here and complain about fabricated anti-data center BS, and just let them rule the world, while the US drifts off into obscurity. Excellent idea. America LAST!!
These data centers dont belong to the US so really not sure what the frick you are talking about here.
Did you mean the United States of Amazon?

All legitimate gripes. But for people to argue that they shouldn't be built at all ...... that ship has sailed.

Kinda the point, right?
Just seems like this is all being forced upon us and a large percent of the population don't want it

I think the datacenters that the DoD are building would belong to the US. Also the hyperscalers (Amazon, Alphabet and Meta) all have dedicated datacenters for Us Gov projects as well.

Well like many other IT projects, the customers want it yesterday.

in this case, the customers being corporations, not the people

People are celebrating their own economic demise. I really don’t get it.

The corporation is being asked by their customers for more hence the reason for the breakneck expansion speed.

AI is useful and effective in work situations, but all this useless making dumb bits/videos with gorilla's etc. is just a waste of time, money, and energy consumption.

AI is highly useful and is here to stay.

What I notice, at least where I'm at, is the elected officials/representatives/councilmen who so enthusiastically endorsed and approved them to be built next to someone else's house have never endorsed or approved one to be built next to their own

the customers being shareholders, who only care about maximizing profit

You are free to complain about it, but it's happening. The most anyone can accomplish is fighting to keep it out of your community. But then it will just be built somewhere else.
And just because some people are against it, doesn't mean a "large percent" of the population is against it.
These are mostly publicly traded companies doing things for their customers, so I would argue that most people are for it.

Gas lines are also a plus. That also eliminates millions more. If you find the right place where you can get the electric power AND natural gas at a specific site, that’s the golden egg.
There is literally no infrastructure in this area. No fiber. No water/sewer. No voltage power. The only thing it has going for it is lots, and lots of open space and no neighbors. FWIW, when fully built out, it will be the largest Data center in the world. It's primary user will be the defense department.
Also, they have reduced their water rights application from 1,900 acre feet/year to 11 acre feet/year. Realistically, it's a trivial amount. Roughly 25-50 homes if my math is correct.

Maximizing profit how?

Again, their customers are corporations, and those corporations are demanding AI in order to maximize profit margins for shareholders
none of this has anything to do with your normal person

By growth and/or efficiency
Some corporations will be able to leverage it for growth.
Most will use for "efficiency"
I don't think you need me to explain what "efficiency" means in the corporate realm
