well, they'd have made Whitefish Bay if they'd put 15 more miles behind her

The lake, it is said, never gives up her dead when the skies of November turn gloomy.

With a load of iron ore twenty-six thousand tons more
Than the Edmund Fitzgerald weighed empty

No other song packs so much history into the one song.

Truly a classic.

Fun facts: Although a historical tragedy brought to apppearingly accurate lyrics, there are a few minor discrepancies:

1. The ship was not "bound for Cleveland". It was going to Detroit. Unload, then go to Cleveland empty for the winter.

2. The main hatchway didn't give in as sung, it was shown later otherwise. Lightfoot now sings live a bit different lyrics to show this.
3. It's not the "Maritime Sailor's Cathedral", it's the "Mariner's Church of Detroit" whose Bell was tolled 29 times.

Great song.

I have a hunting/fishing buddy, and anytime the wind gusts he'll lean over and say, "Fellas it's too rough to feed ya."

Ummmm what?

I guess he's about 80 now, maybe he doesn't sing anymore?

When the gales of November came early

You can't fault him for lyrics that were proven to be incorrect after the song was written.

The ship was the pride of the American side
Coming back from some mill in Wisconsin
As the big freighters go, it was bigger than most
With a crew and good captain well seasoned
