So they didn't hear a train RIGHT behind them? What??

Essa Ricker and Kelsea Webster, both 15, and Kelsea’s little sister, Savannah, waved at a westbound train crew and squeezed in for a selfie as it rolled through Utah’s scenic Spanish Fork Canyon October 2011. "Standing right by a train ahaha this is awesome!!!!" posted Savannah on Facebook as the train's steel wheels banged along the track's steel rail. The excitement in the trio's eyes matched their big smiles as the train fanned their blonde hair in the wind while they posed for the selfie—completely unaware of the approaching train coming from the other direction. The train's headlights were visible on the top right side of the photo.

The teens apparently knew one train was coming but did not realize another train was approaching from the opposite direction and were caught between them, Cannon said. Moments before the accident, one of the girls had posted, "standing right by a train ah haha this is awesome" on her Facebook page. One train either hit the girls or blew them into the path of the other, he said, and it's possible they were hit by both trains. Cannon said noise from the train may have prevented the girls from hearing the second one.

Were these people deaf?
Must have been. You can hear trains pretty far away.

Maybe you should practice situational awareness. A lost art in today's selfie world.

Even if you are deaf you can feel the ground shake. Not to mention the fact that they are easily avoided by simply stepping off the tracks.

I am quite impressed they were able to snap and post before the accident. Someone really knows their way around a smart phone.

Just a sad reminder: Make sure your kids know how dangerous railroad tracks are. Saw someone yesterday getting a photo on the tracks. Some photographers like to take photos on tracks - don't let it happen.
Not to mention it's trespassing.

This happened 6 years ago and you are just now getting the message out OP? Do you know how many kids probably died since then on RR tracks because you didn't tell the good folks at the O-T Lounge about train track selfies. If you would have only told us sooner....

You don't even need to hear a team. You can feel it coming.

Anyone? Anyone?
"Chopper! Sick-em boy!" But all we heard was, "Chopper, sick-balls"!

And my Dad worked for the railroad for 40+ years. He's talked a little about things he's seen but some he won't. One that comes to mind of when he saw a guy's legs sheared clean off when he tried to play "dodge" with the train.
more please!

Surprised the phone survived.

The engineer and conductor have to live with this
I guess, but it's not their fault. Trains don't exactly stop on a dime.

How did not hear it or feel the vibrations on the track?
Seems like no one read the article.

My grandpa was an engineer for KCS for about the same amount of time. He said cows were quite common and yes, he hit more than a couple of people. Mostly bums, some people in cars, and a couple of suicides. Like you said, he didn't talk about hitting people much.
Eta: Has to be tough to have a front row seat and watch that on something you can't stop for a mile or so.

It probably didn't. Apparently they got the pic posted on Facebook before the train hit them
