Soooo glad I spent time solving retarded math questions in school. I’ve used this particular one many times.

As someone who teaches math, this captures why people hate it. The only interesting thing here is unclear notation, which undermines the point of learning math at all

How is the answer not 2?

Because once you solve the addition problem inside the parenthesis the 2(12) becomes a multiplication step, which is equal to the division step. Since the division step comes first when reading left to right you divide 48 by 2 to get 24. You then multiply 24 by 12 to get 288.

In the way it is written, that is not the order of operation.
48/2 * 12
48/2 * 12

I feel like the classical division symbol makes these type of expressions harder to parce (recalling PEMDAS), versus using fractions to denote division

Holy shite people it is 288.
Even ChatGPT will tell you it is 288
