The Heaven’s Gate cult website from the 1990’s is intact

This was the group that killed themselves believing they would travel to a spaceship near the Hale Bopp comet.
If nothing else it is interesting to look back on an old frozen in time webpage.
LINK
As an aside, the Hale Bopp comet was here in 1997 and will next return in 4385.

I had just been on a backpacking trip in the Ozarks. Spectacular views of the comet away from city lights. Got back to the trailhead and it was all over the radio. Weird times.

Ya'll a bunch of haters who can't even fathom the plane of existence those people are on now.

quote:
To commit suicide, members took phenobarbital mixed with apple sauce or pudding and washed it down with vodka. Additionally, they secured plastic bags around their heads after ingesting the mix to induce asphyxiation. All 39 were dressed in identical black shirts and sweat pants, brand new black-and-white Nike Decades athletic shoes, and armband patches reading "Heaven's Gate Away Team" (one of many instances of the group's use of the Star Trek fictional universe's nomenclature). Each member had on their person a five-dollar bill and three quarters in their pockets: the five dollar bill was to cover vagrancy fines while members were out on jobs, while the quarters were to make phone calls. Once dead, a living member would arrange the body by removing the plastic bag from the person's head. They then posed the body so that it lay neatly in their own bed, with faces and torsos covered by a square purple cloth.
shite was wild. But they had a sense of humor.

But were they wrong?
Think of the world when they left, versus now.

I emailed them.
I await a response.

I remember because their leader was only the second Applewhite I'd ever heard of, BR's QB being the other.
SNL spoofed them relentlessly, despite the mass deaths, including one of the best fake commercials they ever did.

I just looked for the commercial I mentioned, and it seems to have been scrubbed from the internet.
It's the "Keds" commercial that spoofs the Nike John Lennon "Revolution" ad. The NBC link says video no longer available. I guess someone got offended.

Is that website angelfire or geocities?
I can't be mad at a bunch of Nike fans going out like this. You do you, I guess.
