I listened to a podcast about them (cult liter). Supposedly they have two surviving members who keep the site up and believe the leader is still coming back from them.

Hale Bopp was a freaking event. I remember staring up into the sky for minutes on end just marveling at the thing. Nine-year-old me couldn't believe something like that in the universe could exist. You read about comets and other heavenly bodies, even see pictures of them in books, but it's no substitute for viewing the real thing with your own eyes.

As for Heaven's Gate, even then I was confused about their motivations for offing themselves. I think nowadays I recognize that people are crazy and therefore do crazy stuff, but back then, as an innocent child, it just made me scratch my head.

Say what you want about their religious beliefs, those guys knew about two things; web design and clothing fashion.

I emailed “anyone here”

Response “yes we are here”. No name given.
So they can email from wherever the comet took them.

I guess it is possible that they sent my tape then. It just might take awhile to get here from Epsilon 452.

I'll be more patient.

In the same month, the group purchased alien abduction insurance that would cover up to 50 members and would pay out $1 million per person (the policy covered abduction, impregnation, or death by aliens).

Well, looks like I need to get on the phone with Allstate ASAP.

I think Heavens Gate is my second favorite cult, next to Jim Jones. The Branch Davidians get an honorable mention.
