re: The heat is turning up in Baton Rouge for the BRAVE slush fund

This should teach Baton Rouge voters that being black is not a qualification for public office. Between SWB and Slaughter, the people of EBR and WBR parishes should learn some valuable lessons (they won't).

Making sure funds are properly spent is racist.
You have to look at this from their point of view.
It's a typical democrat way of looking at things in that emotions > facts.
The GIS program LSU employed overtly showed areas of BR where crime was the highest in order for police to target those areas to reduce crime. All that does is shine a spotlight on the same areas that Gravy and crew know are almost exclusively black, therefore it looks bad on their community. That's why they love these alternative programs. It takes the spotlight off these areas and allows them to line their pockets while "attacking the problem" under the radar. The only problem is that poetry camp and midnight basketball are in no way as effective as an increased police presence.
They would prefer to have crime stay the same or even rise just so they can feel good about their atrocious methodology.

Why do the people of Louisiana continue to elect one shitty official after another?
Very good question, Rebel
You see, I was a transplant that lived in BR for ten years and closely studied Louisiana way of life and it comes down to this... In Louisiana the biggest turds float to the top and they usually hold political offices or pull the strings. I mean, who the hell would want to be mayor of BR, Nola or even governor? The people that run for these positions do so for higher positions later or for monetary gain.

Tradition.
Reminds me of Charlie Wilson's War:
Joanne Herring: Why is Congress saying one thing and doing nothing?
Charlie Wilson: Well, tradition mostly.

Holden was a good mayor and a huge cheer leader for the state of Louisiana.
He'd have been a fantastic Lt. Governor.

I liked Kip for the most part, but he wasn't whst I would call a good mayor. I will agree he was good at playing dress up in LSU gear and dressing up as father time.

Don't make this a racial thing, it's a pay back thing.
Holden, Broome, etc. don't get elected without help from Blacks and whites. We all know that.
What we want to do is make sure that our tax dollars go to legitimate groups for legitimate work.
As best I can tell from the short list I read, many of these deals went to people for basically nothing.

Gravy says the BRAVE money was supposed to be used "to improve relations between the police and the community," so they hired Silky Skim?

Some here voted Broome becsuse they were worried White was going to rob us blind.
I kid you not.

For once I'll give Gravy a standing chance. Has Brave always been around ? And if so I'd bet it's been another abused program.
No surprise. What a terrible state this is.

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - East Baton Rouge Mayor Sharon Weston Broome says her office is reviewing all contracts related to the BRAVE program and will provide a "comprehensive report" within one week. The mayor’s office has come under fire since the WAFB Investigative Team filed record requests last week related to contracts being issued to Arthur Reed, aka Silky Slim, and others.
quote:
"I think public interest is extremely important, and I support public engagement and transparency," Broome said in a written statement late Monday. "I or the chief administrative officer will continue to do what I stated last week, which is to review every contract that comes through the Office of the Mayor-President to ensure quality, cost-effective services for the people of East Baton Rouge Parish. In addition, I have directed my administration to prepare a comprehensive report related to BRAVE contracts, projects and funding. We will provide a status report to the media no later than Monday, August 7.”

Well shite. It all makes sense now. If she hires an incompetent CAO then if any of these contracts blow back on her she can just blame it on him/her.
Right now she can use the excuse that she was so tied up in her work (she hasn't had a vacation in 6 WHOLE MONTHS) she didn't have time to review the contracts. Since she has no CAO, there is no one at fault.

CSB: I had to go to city hall last week, about 2 or 3 in the afternoon
I got off the elevator on the 3rd floor by mistake... the lights were off in the mayors office and the doors were locked
I asked one of the guys hanging around the council office doors if that was normal and he just started laughing
