People generally don’t spend much time pondering these things, but the future is really dictated by who is having children. The groups having the most, I think, are the poor, immigrants and some pockets of uber-religious (like the tv Dugars).

America will be a very different place in 30-50 years. I’m sure these trends are true in Western Europe as well, since we seem to lag behind them by a couple decades. So I guess Western civilization is in for some demographic upheaval over the next half century.

Or did people (with money) move to Westchester from Manhattan once they planned to have kids?

Bingo!

The reason for that is simple. Westchester has some of the best school districts in the country. It pays to have as many kids as possible over a short period of time because there are exceptional public schools with no tuition.

The catch is that because of those schools you have outrageous property values ($800k+ for very average houses) and outrageous property taxes ($15k-25k+/year). Still its cheaper than paying tuition, you just need the capital to buy into the school system which 90% of people cant do.

This is one of several reasons why the electoral college is so important. Shows how forward thinking the Founders were.

You have real people determined to get their children ahead in the real world. Alternatively, you have these childless, selfish, small minded ideologues, who place self indulgent religious zealotry about abstract bullshite above real people.

The shallow brats who say having children is "selfish."

Thank God for the Founders and the electoral college, man.

People having or not having children don’t consider their impact on the future.

That’s what happens when you tax your population into oblivion. They can’t afford to have homes and raise families so they leave.

It’s the lack of new children being born that has brought down most major empires throughout history.

Oh I'll bite. Name one civilization on human history that has been destroyed by inadequate reproduction rates (that was not immediately after a famine, plague, or war).

I graduated with a guy who lives in New York City.

I catch a beer with him about twice a year when he comes in town.

We are almost 40 and he has no kids and he said he has no desire at this point.

Went up there with a masters degree years ago and got a dang awesome paying job and he basically just lives it up.

Some people are just born to roam free and i honestly see nothing wrong with it

They are Akko g about birth rates in Major cities. They aren’t saying people are not having kids, people aren’t having kids in the cities anymore. They all live in the burbs and have their kids.

I’m one of those people who left the city with my wife and moved into the burbs to have a safe place to raise my kids. Living in the city wasn’t safe, there weren’t enough parks or areas for the kids to play. It was a no brainer for us and we moved out when we started planning our family. My neighborhood is full of kids of all ages and their parents all work in or around the city.

Cities are not practical for families and people today now have the resources and finances to move away from the cities into a safer and better environment.

Mike Judge is a prophet. This is why sterilization for government subsidies is necessary.

I make an above-average living and am married, no kids.. we live in the city, but that’s irrelevant .. i cant imagine having kids unless i was LOADED.. there are simply too many variables, too many things that can go wrong, from kids being born with disabilities (expensive) to losing our jobs and having trouble making ends meet in a downturn.. i honestly dont see how i’d ever sleep at night worrying about providing for kids, and i’m not paycheck to paycheck, not even close. Not saying this is how everyone should see things, or that i look down on anyone for having their own basketball team’s worth of kids- it’s just the only way *I’d* feel comfortable .. there are no guarantees, but at least with big $$ you could minimize the variables a lot.

That’s a real long-winded way for you to say that children are considered to be an inconvenience in your mind.

This isn't groundbreaking... I have to imagine that it would cost a fortune to raise a kid from birth through graduation in Manhattan.

Daycare and private school are already outrageously expensive in places like Baton Rouge.

It’s not cheap but there are some excellent public schools in manhattan. Private school K-12 will run you about $40-50k per kid.

I was in New York two weeks ago for meetings. Literally almost every single person I spoke with over the age of 30, said that they need to get the F out of New York.

People are already leaving, but I expect that to accelerate significantly. New York went through a golden age in the early 2000’s, but it’s already on the decline and everyone can see it.

The subways are already filthy again, and it won’t be long until the real crime starts to follow. It’s too expensive, everyone is taxed to death, no one can afford to even take advantage of the opportunities that are there.

I think growing up in the middle of NYC would be an amazing experience for a kid, seriously.. I grew up in NOLA and it was a blast experiencing all that it had to offer, but NYC would be on a different level.

Don’t listen to the haters, if you can afford it, then take advantage of it and resist the urge to move to Long Island or Jersey/CT where your kid would have a cookie cutter experience.
