Yeah allowing non-college folk to join made it more popular but has also diminished it's fun. Too many Co-workers and family. Although I think it's less fun mostly bc we're getting older. Now it is politics, birthday reminders, and weird spats amongst dumb women who take it too seriously and lash out at each other with vague posts. ("It's sad that some people are fake haters but that's ok, I'll be fine without you blah blah....")

Thank you for your condolences. Her death was such a shock. It was such a comfort to be able to grieve with her friends and my family by sharing on her page. It is a lovely tribute to her. They shared so many great pics of her.
I get it that FB isn't for everyone. I've learned to "unfollow" people or delete them. With my family being all over the US, I appreciate being able to keep in touch with them. I hate talking on the phone and I hate going places for social occasions so FB is my form of communication. My family and friends keep me laughing.
I hope FB doesn't fail.
Like you said, it's not for everyone, but I definitely understand it can be a valuable tool. And I don't think you have to worry about it failing anytime soon. There will always have something new popping up (snapchat, etc, etc) that will be trendy, but FB will stay a constant because of how it has established itself. If anyone wants to reconnect with someone and don't know how to do so, FB is the first place to check.

This guy gets it. If you were actually active on it and in college during that period it was great for what it was, basically a heaven sent hookup tool of all hookup tools. Not to mention you could actually post pictures of the things you were doing and not be worried about bosses, parents, church members, etc seeing them.

I owe Tom a beer or postcard or something for all the times I got laid from MySpace. Was more effective than Tinder in its day.

AOL was once "in our social fabric" with an all time high stock price. You used it for chat rooms, instant messenger, email, news, Internet, etc..... There was no way it was going to go away.
Now it's joked about as being a dinosaur and quickly fading from memory. Something so integral to the lives of those who used it, and now it's barely remembered except for a passing joke.
Eventually the same will happen to Facebook. Now, I still have 60 year old relatives that use AOL email, and I have no doubt in 30 years I'll have 60 year old aquatintences who post selfies and dumb bullshite on Facebook but it's not going to be what it is now. The next generation will kill it.

Does no one remember collegeclub.com? They came to LSU in 1999-2000, took your pic in the quad and told you to go to the site to see the pic. It was essentially MS & FB. My first taste of social media. I rarely post on FB. Scroll through and wonder why:
I am "friends" with you
I care about your politics
I would care about pics of your kids (I am friends with you, not your children)
I am still on this stupid site

Many businesses have FB accounts, sometimes I go there for information. I'm not a FB member.
Facebook seems like an online protest or riot. Too many SJWs and irrational people on there for me.
The best thing I can say about FB is that it makes the OT look like a Mensa meeting in comparison.

A few observations:
1. Was great to catch up on old classmates and plan reunions.
2. Was great for keeping in touch with family and friends who live away.
3. Was great for reading humorous and sarcastic quips from people.
4. Things turned South when it decided to become Instagram with incessant selfies of people.
5. Turned further South when my parents' generation (in their 70's) started getting on and now comment on every damn thing I say.
6. Took a complete nosedive when my kids jumped off FB for Snapchat so I couldn't spy on them.
7. I also quit going on there as much once it became a swap-meet / Craigslist/ classified ad page.
The good news? I think the classified ad (ness) of it is going to save it from the death spiral. Because instead of stupid selfies and/or pictures of food, I see stuff people actually have for sale (as long as the meth heads will stay off it and stop selling lawn mowers, blue jeans and stolen iPhones).

It's the internet. Its changing constantly.
Saying "facebook" will be nostalgia one day like "AOL, 'Wanna Cyber', Myspace, and chatroom."
I have NO IDEA what will replace it but something will.

Facebook is doing a lot of investment into VR.

Hey,waterboy,
The FB also good for disaster situations---somebody's house burns down, a neighbor has a post up with the sizes of clothes needed and where to take them.
I see it as the local news channel but without the spraytans.

Instagram has 5x the users that Snapchat has.

Facebook owns Instagram. Best purchase they have made.
They will eventually need to buy Snap as well.

Some of y'all need to stop being so literal, Jesus.
Yes I realize Facebook has more users and traffic than ever, and IMHO that's ultimately what will ruin it for a lot of people (just like it already has for me and several i know). The broader it gets the less personal it becomes and that'll slowly turn off those that are actually there to keep up with old friends and family.
I never wanted to receive a million invites to play FarmVille, join some GoT fan group, or see what type of coffee everyone and their brother are having at Starbucks. I damn sure didn't want to see the top 5 out of 150 selfies you took making the duckface in your rear view mirror or hear every idiotic thought you swore was genius in your head. I just wanted to keep in touch with friends easily.
There will become more and more automated spam and advertising as the Internet and tech continues to evolve and get more advanced; picture the Chappelles show sketch where he goes into the Internet. Like myspace it'll probably never truly die out, but it will most likely transform into something more niche related.

The constant pics of kids, I can understand that. My wife and I post some every now and then for the family members we are friends with. Don't need daily pics but it's understandable when young parents are proud of their kids and want to show them off. The constant selfies? Ugh. Selfies are the lamest type of photos. Worse than pics of your food or cup of coffee. Bc I know what you look like and it's not interesting. And girls will never stop duck facing.
