A lot can't.

Basic swimming skills need to be mandatory in school.

Theo Huxtable was based on Ennis Cosby, Bill's son who also passed away years ago.

That sucks. Seemed like one of the very few non-heathens in Hollywood.

Really sad. I know he suffered from dyslexia but I didn’t realize it was this bad

I always imagined all of the Cosby kids being excellent swimmers.

Loved his "Raptor" character on The Resident.
Wife and I are in the middle of watching this series. His portrayal as a cardiothoracic surgeon was spot on…very calm, cool, and direct in high-stress situations.

First Ryan Mallett, now Theo. Rip currents are indiscriminate murderers. What assholes.

Damn RIP Theo. How does an adult not know how to swim? Maybe more to it than just swimming ability?

Lack of swimming ability, at all, is a problem in the black community. I have a coworker who does this as a community service thing (free swim lessons for young blacks). It’s a passion of his.
That said, the ocean can overwhelm people who normally function fine in a pool or other environment.

Curious if he was in a treacherous swimming environment or if it was calm water

An article I read earlier said he was pulled out to sea by current.

If I can’t swim there’s no damn way I’m getting in the ocean w/o a life jacket on.

Such a shame. He seemed like a good dude.

Well that sucks, seems like us mid-lifers grew up in the Cosby household. If you did you’ll get the reference immediately. RIP.

This is true, unfortunately

Our daughter, who's adopted, is black and we paid for swimming lessons when she was 5 and 6. She's 10 now. One of the best decisions we ever made.

I don't know if any of you have ever been in a rip current but it is pretty damn scary. I was caught in one years ago when down at the Gulf of America.

I was 20 years old and in damn good shape. If wasn't 20 yo and in shape I would have drown I have no doubt. Red flags, stay out of the water.

As opposed to an intentional drowning?
Virginia Woolf, Hart Crane, and a bunch of other folks would respond that this can happen.

Lotsa folks have jumped off ships at sea to effect this end.

ETA: Not implying that Warner did, merely pointing out that suicide death by drowning is not unheard of.
